Does anyone remember a tackle store called the Tackle Box here in town? Tried doing a search on it and can't find much info. Where was it and who owned it?

Thanks!

It was on Rodd Field Rd. I believe it's a daycare center now. Don't know who owned it but I was at the closing auction they had. I believe it closed in '88???

Yep, I remember well. It was on Everhart to start with and did great business. They ended up building the new place on Rodd Field. I will think of the owners name, just can not remember as of yet. He had a big ol boy named Rudy that worked a long time for him, he was great, knowledgable, helpful, full of information and a craftsman. It was a great tackle shop and then one day, no more..........cC

Ahh, memories from the past. The Full Stringer was a part time job as a teenager. Wink

The Tackle box was where Club Cheetah is on SPID by Turners. I bought some 542 & 552 blanks from Copano Cruisins brother that he bought at the closing auction. The FullStringer started on everhart then moved to Roddfield. It was mike uras then Rudy Mayorga . While on the subject. Roy's bought out mr Mac Mac's bait &tackle back in 85. Ennis Joslin ran right into the location. Padre pawn was B&B tackle. Wind and wave was A&H. And who could forget Eds Sporting goods.

Was Ed's located where the bluff HEB highway entrance is now? I worked at a bait stand at that location in the 70's but cannot remember the name. Sold tackle, gas, bait and block ice.
Ed's Bait and Tackle? Run by his wife after he died?

Damn, I'm getting old. Embarassed

Yes. I think Eds daughter and son in law Ken ran the store for a few short years after his death. I remember the Calcutta Bamboo out front. Dead shrimp in a paper sack.

I concur with CaptFrankie....The Tackle Box was where the club is now. I grew up right across SPID from the place. That was basically where the highway part of SPID ended and there was still a big ditch in between the two parts of SPID. My brothers and I would go down in the ditch and jump the part with water to get there. My mom still has to live across from that noisy a*s club that keeps her up until 2 am almost every night. That was pretty much the same way I went to work when the waterslide was still open right down the road toward Nile.

I also was as the Full Stringer auction.....that is where a learned the term 'lot.' It is a good word since I still can't afford a lot.

And CaptFrankie, I think you pretty much nailed all the stores except Gulf Sports on Leopard.

And there was one more, small store on Everhart very close to SPID that wasn't there very long if my memory is right. The only thing I can say for sure is I bought my 552 when they were going out of business for $58 in 1984...or should I say my parents bought it as my graduation present. I didn't get the grips, reel seat and guides until Christmas '84.

So many tackle shops have come and gone. A lot of those shops where really neat. But Roys Bait & Tackle has stood the test of time. Heard praises, and heard some bad mouthing, but they're still here. They must be doing something right.

Remember the "Full Stringer" and Mike Yuras. Free peanuts and beer on tap while you shopped.

There was another, on McArdle across from the (at the time) new mall. Mainly sold bluewater gear.

Did not last very long, 1976 or so?
