I hit the pier early yesterday armed with a quart of live shrimp from Clem's, and my 'Smack Whacker' popping cork rig.

It wasn't long after the sun came up and we landed our first Smack

It's nothing fancy, just a typical rattling cork with a length of about 30" of 60 lb floro, with a very small swivel, and a trace of 40 lb Malin and a Gamakatsu 1/0 Octopus Circle Hook.

I have caught more pomps at BHP using this rig than I have EVER caught fishing PINS or any place else.

The smacks love it, pomps love it, I've caught sheepshead, reds, specks, and even jacks on it.

Live shrimp or a live finger mullet is money in the bank.

You da man! Very Happy

Except for the crimp, I like it. I'm a knot man myself, I've seen too many crimps fail..... At least more often than MY knots! Cool

On the wire to Fluoro: i tie mine using an Albright knot. Works great with the two and no possible fish spooking swivel close to the hook. I had the same though on the wire length, but to each there own, and as you said it works great for you. Wink

I must be good at making crimps, because I've never had one fail

Nice set up! I guess you are a crimp master. I also have had some crimps fail on me when hooking up with a monster fish. Congrats.

I need to test run a couple dozen of them outfits before we here at Corpusfishing can pass judgement

My strong suspicion is that one's own crimps are done more carefully and inspected way better than the crap that's for sale in stores. Still, I like the minimalist approach in most things........that's why i can't stand progressive jazz!!!!!!! Shocked Rolling Eyes Embarassed

I like that rig I think I'll try rigging it up with the same setup. I have never used 60 lb floro I believe that's what makes the crimp hold together nice and tight. I have been using 18" steel leaders but I will rig one using your method on my next fishing trip in May. Thanks, for the Tip BigHead

I've had big reds bust crimps but this is more tban likely due to corrosion caused by tackle box neglect.
