I don't know about the rods and I have owned or used the reel your talking about.
For $150 on a little reel like that I would go ahead and get a Calcutta 200B or something that is better for maintenance.
This is not apples to apples but I had/have a Quick silver left hand and I loved it but...........................a few trips to the beach and a couple of years use I pulled the end caps to put some oil in there and got the spool to have as much side slap as I could.
Well the thing started grinding like something was out of place and I could not get the flipping thing apart. The plastic sides were glued on the frame. It came with a parts breakdown but that is worthless because it will not come apart without breaking the plastic.
I think those reels are great for a lake or river but don't dunk them in salt water and keep them away from sand. You gotta have something you can take apart at the beach if it gets dunked or knocked in the sand. It's going to happen.
I'm only out $50.

See, this is why I ask for opinions It's things like this that matter and I appreciate it very much. I was kinda looking at reels like that one, and I just wasn't sure of how clunky they might be when it comes to light tackle jig action. I'm up for trying anything definately as I'm pretty new to salt action. Unfortunately I'm more of a lefty as far as smooth bait action goes, I'll have to browse options like that Calcutta 200b you mentioned. I can see what you mean as far as maintenance friendly too, reels like that one and my 25LW are pretty simple once you break em down. |

The falcon coastal is a pretty nice rod. My buddy has the 7'6" medium fast and I was impressed with it's sensitivity and casting. I'm a big fan of curados. The exchange here on base has the 200g7 curados for 129 and no tax (I think). It's a good setup for the kayak and wade fishing but for chasing big uglies it's probably a little under sized as far as line capacity and rod strength for tossing anything over a 1/2 to 3/4 oz weight. _________________ It's not the destination, the journey is everything. |

| Came up on that Abu Garcia 7000 again. I've had my eye on it for a while now, I think maybe that could be a decent starter or maybe the Shimano Cardiff. |

Thanks for the advice, with that said I'm not specifically chasing big uglies but it was definately fun reeling them in the other day, lol. As far as this rig I'm putting together I (hope) understand that when it comes to yakking or wade fishing you kinda need that rig that can be in the middle ground of most species of fish. Granted, I'm not gonna accidentally hook up on a shark and reel it in (a large one), but the idea is that I can still hoook up on lets say a 40lb ugly and still have a fighting chance to pull em in. If I intentionally bottom fish I do plan to set out a heavier rod for sure as far as shore fishing goes, but if it's wading or yaking I'd like to at least TRY to have the middle ground with what I'm using. I'll have to check out those Curado's man, thanks!! |

I've bought cheapies and customs, been up and down the rod scale for years. I finally wised up and just went to the Shakespeare Ugly Stick. Made in all shapes and sizes, great rod, stands up to everything. Very reasonably priced. You simply can't go wrong with the Ugly Stick. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

im gonna have to agree..
Ive always been a sucker for an ugly stick, good inexpensive rod that can take a beating. I used the stock reel for about 8mo before it died on me. Then bought a shimano sedona 4000fd and have pulled up plenty of monsters (in my mind?) 34in red, and a 38in drum sooo?

The ugly stick is all my uncle carries and swears by. I have never seen one fail yet. I recently bought a cheap Academy brand rod and I tell you what. It has been awesome so far and it has a lifetime replacement warranty. _________________ "I'm telling you, those Reds are in there THICK! |

| Yes try out what others suggest but in the end if it not what you really like your not going to be happy using it and your not going to be happy fishing. I love my new rig I'm so happy with it. It's not the latest and greatest but it's what I like. Even if I don't catch fish I just like using it. As far as starter rigs, it depends how you treat your equipment, if your pretty careful with it I'm mean don't just thrown in the back of the truck, Id go all out in the beginning why not. But the thing with high end equipment it's not made for durability they are specialized in certain areas, sensitivity being the main area. |

So much great feedback! I def take care of my equipment, I'm actually in the process of breaking down my very few current rigs for cleaning and oiling (Penn 25LW, Penn MF Feirce, and H20 Express). While the fierce is my wife's, that H20 express is prob my fav rig right now, maybe that's because I caught my first Red Fish ever (27.5inches) on it while jigging a 4 inch arty mullet at Port A jetty. I'm not impartial to the ugly sticks, they are just a new brand to me and I have no experience with em. I was actually looking into pickin up one of their tall surf rods to help cut cost for a surf rig. With so many diff variations of the type of Rod I'm looking for right now I think my biggest decision is gonna be the reel that I choose for it. Finding that happy medium for jigging sensitivity and strength is what is on my mind for it. |

On that Penn 25LW...Do you ever have problems with it? Check this out. I bought a Penn Defiance 25LW Rod/Reel combo last summer. I took that combo out for the first time on my uncles boat. We launched from Packery Channel and went out a place called the Liberty reef if I remember correctly. On my first drop in with that combo I hooked up to something. It was fighting like crazy. 10 min. in to the fight SNAP the top 8" of the pole snapped off but the fish was still on. So with my newly customized tuna stick I keep at the fight. My drag was pulling and pulling and pulling. Finally I am making ground and the fish gives another good jerk and my whole drag system or something stripped out. Instead of line letting go with the drag the whole crank would turn. The only way I could get the line to stop going out was to physically hold the crank in place. After my uncle and cousin stopped laughing at me we cut the line. I just got ahold of Penn the other day and they had me send photo's and the serial number in. _________________ "I'm telling you, those Reds are in there THICK! |

| To be honest I've only used my 25LW Defiance Set up once just to see how the action was on it. Was pretty rough casting with that rod ( I assumed it would be ). I actually won mine through a group tournament my friends and I held. It wouldn't be my first choice especially since I don't have a boat to go out and down rig on anything exciting. The one time I used it though I didn't actually hook up on anything so for now the jury is still out on whether or not it's a decent set up. From the reviews I've read though the issues with the reel seem to be fairly common, which to me is sad that Penn is still putting it out there. As far as the Rod goes I'll find out how it holds up this summer on some sharks I guess, it's not a heavy heavy rod but I figured maybe we'll set some bait out and put the screws to it. Sad to hear about your Defiance set up, I hope they take care of you properly. |

| Oh and the reason I'm taking my 25LW apart and doing a clean/oil is because it seems like it has some friction going on... perhaps that's a sign though. |
