To start things up. The cleanup was a great success. Hoards of locals, winter Texans and out of towners showed up. I ended up giving four ROTC cadets a ride down to the 30 (good group of kids).
The driving was phenomenally bad. My new ride heated up the transmission to the point that I had to stop at the 25 to idle down to normal opporating temperature. Perhaps we can schedule a low tide cleanup next time. Chili cheese dogs are great coming off the beach. And I can't wait for the next one. Also, it's silly to think your going to go fishing after the cleanup. Had no desire afterwards. _________________

Sorry about the tranny. Yeah compared to Mustang Island four wheel drive conditions Big Shell is a different story. Thanks for coming and taking the volunteers down. That's what it's all about.

We were in the second group to head out. I believe we went to mm 28. What a drive.... As soon as we stopped one of Ainsworth Truckings rigs got buried trying to turn around with that big trailer. Good day over all. Did that big monster truck break down early this morning? _________________ "Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught." |

Well that was certainly a learning experience... Pickup four very nice riders for the trip down an back. Great bunch, good conversation and very interesting folks.
First lesson, I'm too old to get up at 3AM, drive 190 miles to the staging area, then 28 miles down the beach and back then 190 miles back home to attend a wild game dinner fund raiser.
Second, I learned I can handle some pretty sloppy driving conditions so I can plan a funzies trip down beach to camp and fish. Hey, I help clean it I should start using it.
Third, there are lots of dedicated people that volunteer, work hard cleaning up a place they will never visit accept to clean up just because it is the right thing to do. I admire them.

Yes, the driving sucked. My old 2001 diesel F250 plowed thru the sand without a hitch. The transmissions must be stouter on the 3\4 and one ton trucks. Thirteen years of driving on the beach and still going strong.
Providing the grabbers to folks really helped with the clean up. The beach looked cleaner this time because all of the little pieces of trash were picked up. Also, I was able to get some folks to help me remove the trash on the face of the dunes up in the grass. There is a lot of trash up there as well. |

Those folks brought their own and they are great back savers especially when picking up small stuff like bottle tops.
We've considered getting about 500 but were thinking they'd be too expensive and we'd have to have a place to keep them, check them out to section leaders, etc. But we may need to revisit that idea. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

we got up at 530 (545 for the little man)
got to staging at 650ish. I think we were in section 5 or 6 (26mm)
It was our second time going out that far, we generally stick to 20 or so. It was great going out with a group (we have no long haul beach friends :/ ) as it really gave my fiance confidence in driving through the sand knowing there was someone that could pull him out. I on the other hand love driving on the sand and just power through it
I would for next year to make sure everyone got their "swag cca bag" prior to going out. It would have been nice to have those gloves. I saw a few people in our group with them but that was it. _________________

Hey,piermom, my wife and I were also in #5. Wish we would have met up.
Mary had the only set of grabbers we had. Wish I had a 2nd set. Might buy another set for next year. Had to give up picking up about the last 100 yds. or so. Back couldn't bend any more.
Beach looked great afterwards. I know a lot of trash comes in from offshore, but I wish people using the beach would carry what they bring back out. |

Our group brought our own grabbers and I have to say that's the only way to go. We use them at work for some of our other OTJ events and I'm telling you they are worth their weight in gold. Our aluminum ones cost about $10 each but I've seen some different types here locally at Harbor Freight for about $2 or $3. _________________ "Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught." |

My son and I rode down with a friend. We were in the group cleaning 27-28. The whole event was well organized and run. Driving conditions on the sand could have been nicer, but as with any time you drive down beach, you take what she gives you. The people were great and yes after collecting five or six bags of plastic, the body begins to complain a little. Today I can feel it and it's a reminder of participation in a worthwhile event.
I wouldn't have missed the chance to show my son how good folks can come together and work to clean a huge area. The beach looked much better as we drove north from the 27!
To all the folks who put the event together, well done! |

my son probably borrowed them from her then
he thought they were the coolest things ever.
and live and learn on meeting up, plus there is always next year
It would be fun as a suggestion if everyone next year met someplace at x spot on the island and drove out together for more chances of putting names to screen names _________________

Thanks and you know the folks in the groups that went the furthest south had the toughest drive but the best view coming back. There is nothing like driving back those 13 plus miles in the work area and seeing that clean beach. The washboard ruts and bumpy ride north were just icing on the cake _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |
