The Caller-Times is reporting today that there is some illegal dumping of raccoon and coyote carcasses out on the Island. Not exactly new news there Caller-Times. Rolling Eyes I came across the raccoon pile weeks ago!

As a relative newcomer this kind of freaked me out... I'm not surprised at all that people are doing it, but I'm concerned because we take our dogs to the beach all the time. They never get really in to the dunes, they always stay within our sight from the beach, but sometimes they do go sniff around at the base of them. I know I'm going to sound totally naive, but should we be concerned? Are people putting these traps like deep into the dunes or does anyone know if the traps have been found closer to the beach at all?

While there has been some trapping activity around the subdivisions bordering on the Nueces/Kleberg County line (illegal, as it was not a "trapper" but folks looking to rid the neighborhood of the pet/kid threats), this dumping activity is likely done by a trapper who works inland and uses the Island as a convenient dump. It's far from prying eyes.

This particular raccoon pile was found on a stretch of road that is notorious as a dumping ground for pig and deer carcasses in hunting season.

I would not worry too much about traps in the dunes, as it applies to your dogs. What I WOULD worry about are the rattlesnakes, or the occasional live coyote. Those pose way more of a threat to a wayward dog in the dunes.
