Nice!! What county are you hunting in? TP&W did a study a few years back and up around Seguin, San Marcos area they have the highest concentration of melanistic deer in the nation!

This was up in Wimberley (Hays Co.), so within the 8-county hot spot that they describe. From what I understand, they haven't attributed a reason to the melanistic population up there... but, it seems to make sense to me that the highest deer density in the country would have it's share.

Have you ever seen any estimates from up in the area? I couldn't find anything really except saying even with the highest concentration, they are still incredibly rare.

It was really tough to get clear shots as this was about 20 minutes after sundown in a wooded area... but a few came out. Here's one other:

Jeb,

We live in Hays county about 9 miles from Wimberly and see them around our house from time to time.

In 2000 I had a lease in Hays county and killed an 11 point melanistic and had him life size mounted .

Ill try and post a picture in a few days
