I'm trying to learn how to surf fish. I think I got the basics down but what is the deal with the sargassum weed. When does it come and go? Are there certain times of year when it's clear? Never really cared about it when we're just hanging out at the beach, but when I'm trying to fish it makes it impossible. Any tips...

It's worse now than it has been probably all year. It comes and goes. There are times when there is virtually no weed. It should clear out soon hopefully and the surf will be on fire. That's just how it is fishing the surf. You can try to fish in it but it's not easy.

It can be present year round thought the normal "sargassum season" runs from April to about the middle of June. Then it appears in patches along some portions of beach. The northeast winds have not helped.

It usually starts spring break beginning of march like clock work then lasts till about June then depending on what's going in the gulf this time of year will determine if there is weed. If you can fish during the middle of the week stick to the piers Bobhall and Caldwell to avoid weed other than that just have to wait it out and take advantage of when it lets up

It's our beach...like fishing windy days... Gotta learn to deal with it or your fishing will be limited.

Yea, it's a bummer. It will get better though.

Anyone else have the pleasure of smelling the big rotten blob of weed at the end of the South Packery Jetty?

I have had the best results walking out to the furthest bar possible, casting out fresh live mullet, and walking back to a rod holder at the waters edge. Obviously, with weed coming in, that method can't be used. You can stand out there and get pounded by the surf and fish between the weed mats but that I do not recommend. Try a weedless spoon for surf trout in the first gut or fish the first gut with live bait between the weed mats. It would surprise you how many fish folks cast right over. L

When the weed is bad use a larger sand grabber than usual. Place you lines into the the current at an extreme angle. The weed will hit you line and slide up it.
Stand by your pole holder and look strait out that's 12 o'clock
Walk up current about 75 yards and wade out and cast your bait to the back side of the second gut. Walk back to the pole holder and tighten the line and set the drag a little firmer than normal. Your line should be at 10 or 2 o'clock.
This works best with larger tackle. The weed will slide up your line and you can pick it off every 15 minutes or if it's windy it will hit the top of your pole and blow off.

Works best for me on a 6 OT with 80# mono, 12 ft surf pole and a 16OZ sand grabber

You can also make upriggers out of 24 ft painters poles. Use the paint brush attachment, clips and rubber bands. Wrap the rubber band on your line then clip it to the top of the painrters pole. Extend the pole and place in to a PVC pole holder. You can clip two lines at a time. See one of my older posts for pics. When you get a run the rubber band will break and help set the hook when the line tightens up.
This will keep your lines out of the first gut and most of the weed
Works best on larger bait that you don't have to check that often
