(Corpus Christi, Texas) - Padre Island National Seashore will conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint on Saturday, September 7, 2013 on Park Road 22 near the park's Entrance Station. The purpose of the checkpoint is to detect and apprehend alcohol and drug impaired drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recognized impaired driving as one of the nation's most often committed and deadliest crimes.

According to NHTSA there were 3399 traffic fatalities in the state of Texas in 2012, with 32 percent being alcohol/DUI related. In addition, NHTSA reports 50 percent of Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related traffic collision in his or her lifetime. Sobriety checkpoints are a proactive deterrent and are one of the most effective methods of reducing the amount of impaired drivers who pose a serious threat to innocent, unsuspecting motorists traveling our roadways.

So far this year, Law Enforcement Park Rangers have charged 59 drivers for driving under the influence (DUI) and issued 169 citations for other alcohol and drug violations. This checkpoint will support the continued detection and deterrence of alcohol and/or drug impaired driving and will contribute to a safe park experience for all visitors.

That's good news, but perhaps we shouldn't be warning everybody. Laughing

this is different from normal stops how? they stop everyone all the time anyway....SSDD...

wow.....6 park rangers have arrested 59 people (so far this year) and the entire ~250 CCPD has only arrested 692 people for DUI....so 9.8 vs. 2.77

means you are 3.5 times more likely to get arrested on PINS for DWI than the entire rest of Corpus Christi.....

what's going on out there?

People think it's OK to drive down the beach drunk, that's what's going on. We just saw in the "Lost Dog" thread last week a camp got hit by a drunk.

As for always getting stopped, I've only been stopped once by a park ranger and that was 5+ years ago. Probly helps that I don't drive down the beach with a beer in my hand.

Believe they are mandated by law to announce the date/time/location. It doesn't fly on state property but I guess they can get away with it on federal property...

Brilliant idea, too bad CCPD aint very brilliant most of the time. I travel yorktown alot and the driving habits by people on that road are insane. I run 45-50mph, I get passed by idiots running 60. Maybe a cop hiding shooting radar would slow of few of those morons down.

As far as camping on the beach, if at all possible park your vehicles in a manor to protect your tent from a direct impact. "circle the wagons"

Byrds fan here. For everything there is a time, a season, and a reason.
On PINS the currency has generally been beer. That time, and season, may be ending on the beach. But whatever the time, or season, there is no good reason to drive impaired.

They also need to hand out tickets on Laguna Shores rd from Hustlin Hornet drive to S.P.I.D. everyday 24 hrs a day. Bet it would be a great place for a checkpoint after 10pm.

That brings to mind an interesting question. Can you drink a single beer while driving a boat? I don't mean to be funny. I'm just asking what the law says. I know the law is that you can't be intoxicated while driving a boat.

that's pretty much exactly what they're doing....

now, I agree with everyone on the drinking and driving, yes, it needs to be kept in check....

but these rangers are attempting to turn PINS into an alcohol-free zone with zero-tolerance....the pendulum has swung just a little too far in this case....
