It has been a great week of offshore fishing and Saturday the Gulf of Mexico looked like it should in the month of August. There were a couple tournaments on Saturday, the "Legends" and a "Majek" boat owners tournament. All the big boats fishing the "Legends" were miles from where we were, but I did see a couple Mayek boats offshore. The "Mosquito Fleet" was out in full force and at times the fishing crowds reminded me of the scene in the movie "Jaws" where everyone is headed out of the harbor trolling around full speed, throwing chum in the water as they went. There is only one rig offshore of the anchorage left and it was loaded with enough boats to fill a showroom floor. There were boat tied off, others trolling, some drifting and in this mass of fishermen, a large crew boat trying to get in so they could drop off workers on the rig. There were lots of small sharks in that depth of water and a couple times I looked over and saw an outboard with three or four fishermen standing there, holding up small sharks trying to get them off the hook. I even saw an older guy jump off his boat to take a swim right behind a shrimp boat that was covered up with these sharks. Toward the end of the day we start fast trolling between a group of shrimp boats right in the middle of the anchorage. We end up catching a "Battle Jack" on a blue and white feather jig trolling close to eight knots. When that fish hit I watched as the 50 lb. Trilene Big Game line was quickly disappearing off my old Penn 309. The clicker was screaming as the young angler grabbed the rod and settled in for a 20 minute fight!

Sikes, has nothing on you, GT. Appears that you're having a good summer. |
