|

| There is an article in the paper today about Baffin Bay fishing guide dying this month from a vibrio infection from a cut in his leg. We all need to be aware of the danger. From the article, it sounds like it went from an itch in lower leg to leg turning swollen and black within a matter of 24 hours. |

My buddy works in a hospital around here...he has seen in up close several times...all it takes it 24 hours and a small wound..the chances of getting it are slim..but it does happen and there is a chance.. _________________

I had a friend of a friend that picked it up in some knee deep mud. I wish I knew if there were specific things to watch for?
very sad for the guide... you would not think a day on the water would result in your death. |

| I now carry a spray bottle of bleach solution with me. Don't use it as often as I probably should. Will probably spray any break in the skin from now on. |

Much discussion about what to use. Hibicleans is suggested by many and supposed to be more effective than hydrogen peroxide, bleach, et. al. I wonder if the guide had a compromised immune system of some sort or whether he/she was healthy. _________________ Mike |

Very sad news. Condolences to family and friends.
This year I'm carrying Hibicleans in my first aid kit and had to use it. I tried out some Ray Guardz and they rubbed my shins raw. Had to take the guards off with open wounds. Talking about out of the frying pan and into the fire. BTW, I did test on a two foot ray that was scoping me out by dropping a jighead on its back. Instead of it spooking and running it buried down and stuck its tail up and said, "Come on make my day." |

Just remembered one of my old general managers from years ago his brother passed from the same thing. He was at a boat ramp loading up and cut his shin after hooking up the boat. I'm not sure how but they amputated his leg a few days later and the poor guy didn't make it. Sad he left two boys and a wife. Just makes you think when your number its called well you never know. And lifeaquatic I was speared by a ray in 05 in four inches of water in the surf so be weary of the rays there where you least expect them to be. Every body was asking why I wasn't doing the shuffle and I told them do your kids do the shuffle while playing at the beach. No response was ever givin. Just watch where you step. it sucked I didn't walk for almost five Weeks without crutches. It went strait threw my ankle. _________________ Been fishing since I was knee high to a grasshopper

It's everywhere, in most healthy folks your immunity system can keep the infection from becoming fatal but there have been some cases that seem to defy that thought. We have resorted to breathable waders in the summer more than once due breaks in the skin. RIP to the guide and prayers up to his family, sad to hear when just another day on the water ends up taking a mans life. |

Get your doc to write you a prescription for Cipro to keep with you on the boat so you can take one immediately if you get a cut on the water.
Hibiclens and all that is great but it is not going to save you from vibrio. The infection spreads from debris implanted beneath the skin and no amount of topical disinfectant is going to kill it. |

FYI... please see the website and note the antibiotics mentioned below.
http://emergency.cdc.gov/disasters/vibriovulnificus.asp
"V. vulnificus infection is treated with antibiotics. When this infection is suspected, treatment with a combination of a third-generation cephalosporin (e.g., ceftazidime) and doxycycline is recommended. V. vulnificus wound infections should be treated with aggressive attention to the wound site; amputation of the affected limb is sometimes necessary." |

Sad day. You just never know. Be ready people. Specially if you have family who are relying on you. Just another day runs out...eventually. _________________
