Took my first trip to the land cut Sunday, hoping to learn a new area aside from PINS. One of my younger bros frequents those Jetties and he was my guide for the trip. I packed along my Squall 650, Ambassador 6000 and my Silvermax Bass rig. Didn't know what to expect so I covered as much as I could.
On the drive to the Land Cut, the first thing I noticed was the Trash...It was everywhere. People had no consideration for others a would park where ever they pleased, completely blocking off areas making others pretty much drive on the dunes to get around them. We arrived at 1:30 and the Jetties were no better, of the 20 people there when we arrived, maybe 3 of them new what they were doing and kept trying to avoid the Googans as they cast out and over others lines. Some Politian wanna be greeted us when we arrived and started talking to us like he had know us our entire lives and was giving us "helpful" hints on what was hitting and what was not (I did not know you could keep all the bull reds you wanted ) Finally got away from him and I caught some shad while my bro rigged up his gear and we headed out to the end of the Jetty. No one there and we claimed the spot under the towers as ours. He started casting out shad while I used my small rods to try for better bait. I ended up catching a gazillion hardheads, all under 5 inches, 1 whiting, 1 croaker and one vermillion snapper. I cast out the croaker live and waited. At about 2, a HERD of dolphins moved in and they were fun to watch, but I knew nothing was going to hit with them around so I started freelining live shrimp by the rocks with my bass rod. No luck and the dolphins eventually moved off. As soon as they left my bro caught a 5lb hardhead on one of his reels and as soon as he released it his other rod takes off and he lands a 24" ray. It was not a southern nor cownose and had a very short tail. I brought in my croaker and thru it back in the bucket. When I moved the bucket out of the sun, I noticed the head of a very dead, very dry bluefish on the rock and I decided to bait up with it, and I cast out about 60 yards into the channel with my Squall. (Side note: I had been gar fishing the day before and was using the same #6 treble hook from then). About 5 minutes later, my clicker goes off and I grab my rod. IT only took about 10' of line and then nothing, so I decided to reel in some line to make sure my weight was still stuck. When I picked up my slack I felt too much tension, and set my hook. the next few minutes were a blur and then we saw the fish. Unfortunately, he decided he wanted to be landed at the end of the Jetty where all the waves were crashing and no flat rock were to be found. I told my bro to just grab the leader and lift him that way. My trebles straightened out My bro and I stared as the Biggest Red either of us had ever seen slowly swam away. I asked him if he had touched it and he said yes, the hooks bent as he was reaching around his head to grab the gills. We estimate that fish to be between 42 and 46 inches, and we considered it a catch (not land) since he was able put his hands on it. The rest of the day was uneventful as the Tarpon moved in and they would not hit anything we threw at them. But it sure was fun watching them roll and the occasional jumper.
All in all, it was a decent trip, though the wind made it hard to do much of anything, except bottom fish. And I came to the conclusion on the drive out, that I would rather stick to my PINS than have to deal with all that trash and inconsiderate folks, even though that was biggest Bull Red I have ever seen lol
