Looking to get a new gun for duck hunting. This is my first time duck hunting so I have a few questions. Does it have to be camo? Pump or semi auto? 12 or 20 gauge? I just don't want to take my baby out to salt water (my o/u). What brand do y'all recommend? And ammo used? Thanks guys going to SA bass pro and dicks to shop around maybe academy too!

Benelli super nova. Keep it clean and lubed and you're good to go. I've never used a camp shotgun, and never had a problem shooting the ducks I wanted to shoot.

Remington 870. The steel loads today are great. 2's to b's in a name brand box of ammo and your golden. There are situations and circumstances that require more specialized equipment.

Welcome to your new habit.

Remington 1100. Used it for years although I've lost interest in duck hunting. If I want to be miserable with waders full of icy salt water I'll go fishing.

Still go after geese though. You can do that on dry land. Wink

12 semiauto camo is what I would, and did get. Easier to find the 12 guage ammo. Semiauto because after years of shooting doubles, I have a hard time remembering to pump. Camo because I think cheap guns look better in camo than in cheap wood and bluing, plus its camo!

I finally broke down and bought a dedicated saltwater duck gun a couple years ago. Stoger M2000. It's camo, synthetic, semiauto, shoots everything from light 2.5's to magnum 3's without adjustments, came with a bunch of chokes, and is sling ready. I don't shoot it a ton, but I have a few hundred rounds through it and it has been flawless so far. I think it was about 500 bucks. I'm very happy with it.

That is a GREAT gun! Benelli is by far my favorite shotgun. For the money, you can't beat the supernova!

I have a little bit different school of thought. I say get a good quality shotgun right off the bat. I say this because I have had to many buddies go cheap to see if they like it with intentions of upgrading if they do. Long story short they always end up upgrading because who dosent like to whack ducks. I shoot a Beretta Xtrema II in camo. I shot a Mossberg pump for a few years before I bit the bullet and got my Beretta, but since then I never looked back. In my experience, the camo seems to protect the guns from the elements better than the bluing or matte finishes. 12 gauge is a good all around gun. I use mine for duck, dove and hopefully some day geese. I would get something that will allow you to shoot 3 1/2"s as well. Not that you need them but it give you more options for more types of hunting.

my neighbor bought a stoeger a few yrs back.. he likes it...
a few have had issues w/them, but most who shoot them like 'em.
i'd recommend a s-m2000...

I've had my Browning BPS for close to 20 years now, been through hell and back and still going strong. My friends like the bottom ejection port because I don't fling shells at them. Laughing

Thanks for the replys and yes this is going to be my saltwater duck gun. Found a Winchester sxp for 249 here in SA. It's chamber for 3 inch shells I think it's perfect for what I want. It's black and black always looks good. 😄

im with blast-n-cast on a good expensive duck gun is well worth the money for them. i have the Beretta a400 extreme unico and it is awesome. But i started with an 870 definitely dont go that route when it comes to saltwater duck hunting. and after the 870 i had the stoeger. i never had issue with it, shot good, smooth, and looked good to. But you can definitely see the quality difference between the Beretta after i got it. i would say if you were to go duck hunting 15 times a year it would last you at least 5 years. so for 650 bucks you really cant beat it unless you are a real serious duck hunter.

Why?

870s have probably killed more ducks on coastal duck hunts than any other shotgun.

Stay away from the new 870's!!! They are crap. Cheap as heck, but crap. Took mine one time and never touched the water and its an orange blob even after all the preventive measures I took. Plus before the salt I was having ejecting problems during dove hunts.

Yes 870 is a popular gun. and probably has killed alot of ducks i know i used mine for the first two years of me duck hunting. and i took good care of it and it still works to this day. But after upgrading to my stoeger i was super pleased about the automatic function and the durable finish. and now i am in the baretta i am not ever going back. Just my opinion not dicing the 870 but the automatics are ways faster shooting, and the recoil is almost erased from the reloading function. the stoeger is only like 200 more dollars than a new 870. it would be well worth it to save the extra little bit and not feel like you want a new gun after one season.

Good call on the BPS...a great shotgun.

You know, something to think about with a duck gun, at least I did, was that no matter how careful you are, the thing is going to get abused in a salt water environment, in a boat, with decoys, blinds, etc.

As much as I love real walnut stocks and beautiful blued steel firearms, there's a LOT to be said for synthetic and anti-corrosion finishes...OR a cheap shotgun that works.

A good buddy of mine uses a Mossbert 835 that he bought at a pawnshop for $175, and beats the crap out of it, and he can't kill that shotgun. I have seen him do nothing more than hose it off, break it down, squirt WD40 all over, it, lube the slide rails and GO.

I wouldn't recommend that, but there's something to be said for a beater shotgun.

Another buddy of mine has a Supernova that is called "Ugly Betty". There's hardly any finish left on it, he had to 'weld' some sort of choke on it, and that thing is a duck murdering shotgun. It's ugly as hell, probably has over 50K rounds through it and just keeps on shooting.

If you want a 'church' gun...get one. If you want a working gun, I'd look for something tougher and more abuse prone.
