Had the opportunity to head down to Destin for a few days last week. Weather wasn't exactly looking ideal but left San Antonio at 9 PM with intentions on driving all night to arrive sometime mid morning.
I had lined up a little bit of everything as far as fishing goes for this trip. This is where its good to have friends that are locals. Spent the first afternoon getting beat up a couple miles offshore while sticking a few kings and bonito. Saw a few sails free jumping, and later learned one was landed off of the pier that day along with some blackfin. Why am I in the boat again?
The next day finally presented us with calm winds. Tarpon pods were coming down the bars, but were picky. I had a couple of follows up to the boat on the 12 wt. After a few hours of being denied, the temptation to pick up a spinning rod was just unbearable. Managed to jump one on that before he spat, and we headed in for the evening.

The next night I met up with my buddy Chris down in Navarre and ran some fresh bonito and cownose out. We had a couple runs in the first quick while before it went quiet. Nevertheless it was a fun night on a beautiful stretch of beach. GINS (Gulf Islands National Seashore) is a good section of beach with almost no condos in sight... A rare thing down here.
Fishing off of the dock behind the house yielded a good amount of trout and redfish. I know I know... I didnt come all the way to Florida for some dinky bay species. But hey, I was getting hungry.
Stupid condos blocking the sunset...
The final days were plagued by sharks. They were simply everywhere. Up on the cobia tower you could see a dozen at any given time. I took the opportunity to get in and get some underwater shots while my father was fighting some of them.
Dolphins in the mix too. Sharks didn |
