Been a few weeks since my last trip, which was kinda a bust so no report on that one. A few random fish caught. Anyway, this was the trip I was waiting for. I was only getting my daughter for a week this summer. Last year she started high school and Cross Country so that had her busy so no time to come and hang out. She ended up doing really well and got bumped up from the JV squad to Varsity after just a few competitions and ended up getting her schools "Athletic Newcomer of the Year" award, on her birthday of all days. I know what you're all thinking, "Sean, you're to young and handsome to have a 15 year old" . I know. Soooo, to celebrate everything, I asked her what she wanted to do when she was down from Dallas before Cross Country practice starts for this year. She wanted to go to PINS because she didn't get to go last year and was dying to get back out there. Well, who am I to argue, even though I hate PINS and fishing , so I said ok.
We left Monday afternoon. I won't really go into to many daily details because we played around more than we actually fished, but we ended up landing 3 keeper B Drum Monday night, which is good because I had no Shark bait. She's caught little 1-2'ers but nothing that really gave her a fight so Shark was a fish def on the list. Tuesday we took the Zodiac into the Landcut\Graveyard\Yarborough Flats and kinda fished but mostly played around. I taught her how to run the boat which she really wanted to do. We had a blast just killing the day and caught 0 fish with our half hearted effort at fishing. Loaded the boat back onto the truck that afternoon and off we went down the beach. Lines out Tuesday night sat untouched til the weed rolled in sometime after midnight. Bummer. Wiped out the lines. Packed up and ran to the jetty Wednesday morning. Spent the day screwing around at the jetty spearfishing and swimming and then moved to the channel. She wanted to run the boat to Port M Thursday and play back there in the LLM and see the town etc. So that's what we did. Drifted some new areas of the LLM and fished and saw plenty of good boils on the flats but no takers. Cleaning stations at the Port M bait shops showed lots of B Drum and Trout but we weren't good enough. Bay fishing still eludes me, that's why I surf fish, lol. Loaded up the boat Thursday afternoon and back down PINS to a nice gut and set up camp hoping Fridays report of small swells would allow us to run the boat offshore. Up Friday morning and it was good enough, although weather\swell was wrong AGAIN, but we made it out a few miles. Got some big Triggers and decent Red Snapper, both firsts for her so she was stoked. Also hooked a Shark that gave us a few good jumps before taking my hook.
The highlight for us, among many things, was Thursday night I cast out some Skipjack on casting leaders. She didn't want me to kayak baits for some reason so I went with it knowing I could get her a good Shark from the wade or 1st anyway. My first bait got hit and snapped the line. I thought that I blew the chance to get her her first decent Shark but about 20 minutes after casting another bait out, it got smacked and fish on! I got the rod off the rack and kept pressure on it until she harnessed in, then it was up to her. Kicked her little rear but she did great and we landed her first big Shark, a 4'4" Blacktip. She was very excited and I was very proud. We ended up tagging it w the tags we had left from Sharkathon since it was her first Shark.
All in all, it was a great 4 days out there. We put 82 miles according to the GPS on the Zodiac in 3 days (holy!) but it was a blast exploring a few new places. She did most of those miles after I showed her how to run the boat and so I just got to sit back and take in the sights and sounds. Flew her back home today a happy camper. I love that she still loves the outdoors, the same way my family took me to PINS when I was little. Kinda a family tradition thing. I'm very happy that at 15 she still wants to hang out with her dad and go camp the way we do every year (except last year). Lots of GREAT memories from this trip. From the Game Warden we met taking the time to sit and talk to us, to me teaching her how to throw the cast net, read the water\guts, find bait with and without polarized lens, etc etc. An awesome week I won't soon forget.
Kinda taught her to use a baitcaster
Confiscated fish the Warden had when he came by to visit, 45" and 43".
"Magic" settings I played with on the new camera
And she thinks we're just fishin - Trace Adkins
Til next time
