Rocky, the best thing to do is eat a chorizo taco before you head offshore. It does absolutely nothing for sea sickness, but the Snapper love it and your fishing buddy's will appreciate you more.
The best thing I have seen used was dramamine on a rubber band looking bracelet with a patch attached that when on your wrist made skin contact, and thus absorption. The guys put them on first thing in the morning before they even showed up to go fish. The Dramamine will make you sluggish and sleepy, be careful, don't want to sleep through the trip either. _________________ Capt. Ross L. McElwee

The patch works great. The only place to get it is from your doctor. It does not make you drowsy and lasts all day. Works great in conjunction with the chorizo taco with bean and bacon. Well maybe 2. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| This one sucks but it absolutely helps.... Stay "relatively" sober the night before. Given the number of times I failed to follow that advise i am positive when measured against sea conditions for the day, food consumed, hours slept, lies told and bed vs floor, staying sober the night before helps. |

Take a box of ginger snaps as well. Ginger is a natural anti-emetic. Start feeling a little headache or heartburn/reflux, chew on some snaps. Don't leave port without them. _________________

The brand name for the patches I get is Transderm Scop. The drug is scoplamine. Rx only and they come in a box of 4 for about 60 bucks. Each patch is supposed to last three consecutive days. They work for me 9 out of 10 times (did not work 2 days ago, for whatever reason). That's the only patch I know of.
For whatever its worth, I usually double down and pop a "less drowsy formula" dramamine, which is meclizine hydrochloride, as soon as I wake up and then again mid day (forgot to on Wednesday). That is over the counter stuff. Regular dramamine is dymenhydrinate. I'll sleep through the whole damn trip on that. |

Ginger Ale and Tootsie Pops. I kid you not.
The ginger ale just for the same reasons as the ginger snaps, but the tootsie pops have the effect of you constantly working your inner ear as you are sucking on them and swallowing. That combats the disconnect between what your eyes are seeing and what your inner ear is telling your brain (which physiologically is the main reason for getting sea sick).
And a good part of it is mental. If you convenience yourself before you leave the jetties that you are going to get sea sick, you probably will.
But the chorizo prep and a can of sardines for lunch will always make you popular with your deckmates!!!! |

| My only complaint about scopolamine patch is spitting cotton balls, no matter how much water I drank. The two times I used them was out of Port Isabel. 1st trip was on about a 30' boat w/ storms in the area, no other issues other than the cotton ball thing. 2nd trip was on a cattle boat that co-workers and I chartered (ala CF offshore trip) very sporty seas, still cotton balls, but was able to puke and reel, puke and reel. Several guys turned real green and just puked, no reel. Around 1 pm drank a couple beers and then it was just reel. |
