A long weekend of moving my buddy into his house in houston required that we reward ourselves with some down time. Returning from Houston on Sunday we saw that the weather was perfect, so we hit north packery.
Conditions were favorable. Surfside sandy green 2-3 foot waves, 3 feet vis. some mullet around. Channel side was brown from outgoing tide. some broken weed.
Solid trout and variously sized reds were caught in the channel, mostly on live shrimp but some trout on lures. Skipjacks favored the lures more than trout. Also saw some small mangroves and one that was >4 lbs caught on shrimp.
On the surf side we caught spanish macks on shrimp under a float. Sharon was the big winner Sunday, with her first texas flounder, which she backed up with a few ladyfish, a sheepshead, and a 17" trout. All on live shrimp.
Sharon's nice flatty.
Tuesday was a different story. Much flatter seas, clearer water, more bait, but less big fish caught. Some reds were caught on the tip of the South Jetty, and on the north jetty nobody caught anything on the jetty while we were there except my little lady.
We had just finished shopping at Roys and she asked what was so special about the silver/yellow 1oz Gotcha plug I just bought. I simply said "they work". We all started casting them on the surf side near the point and her and I both hooked up, along with the guy next to us. Him and I both lost our fish, and when I looked over to her reel, it was being dumped quickly and was already through the braid and into the mono backing. She tightened the drag, and already a crowd was forming behind her.
After a tug of war between the fish and my girl with her trout-rod, I finally net her fish. Her first kingfish ever, and a beast at 45". I asked her if she wanted to keep it, and told her I'd gladly cook it, while informing her of some of the concerns with mercury, etc. She said "$^%# yeah, we are keeping it!"
Needless to say, I couldn't be more proud of her. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

She started out as the girl who would get teary eyed when I kept 16" trout for frying instead of throwing them back. Now she wants to brine and smoke a kingfish. Women... definitely hooked. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

Very impressive. Congrats on having a little lady who likes to fish with you. Sure should cut down on the nasty looks as you leave to go fishing. |
