|
|
| According to the news, there have been three cases of vibrio reported in Nueces County so far this year. One from eating raw oysters, and two from wading in coastal waters/bays. Just a heads up to all wade fishermen now shedding their waders with warmer weather. |

Do y'all know how old these people were? I am curious to see if they are people with compromised immune systems. _________________ JJ |

Yesterday, I spent 4 hours wading in Oso Bay and two hours jumping waves at the north sticks. I seem fine! Physically, that is. |

After having done vibrio research at the UTHSCSA for many years trust me when I tell you that your immune system does not need to be compromized to get very sick from this bacterial pathogen. Most infections come from injesting contaminated foods, however vibrio species such as "vulnificus" do cause a necrotizing faciitis. This is usually the result of a compromized integamentary system (the skin), so be cautious of cuts, scraped or punctured skin as this leaves you vulnerable to potental infection!

They seemed to be "mild" if there is such a thing as there were/are no reports of any hospitalizations or decaying of flesh as in some cases. _________________ Mike |

| My husband lost his right index finger to vibrio vulnificus and has since found out the reason it attacked him. Vibrio likes "iron rich" blood and we found out that he has "iron overload". I would HIGHLY recommend all baywater fishermen have their Ferritin level checked when doing routine bloodwork. One out of 4 men have this. Had we known, he may still have his trigger finger. |
