Memorial Weekend was around the corner so I decided to leave work on Wednesday to get a good spot at the jetties ahead of the weekend crowd. Last year during the holiday weekend there were about 6 camps at the jetties. This was going to be my first trip back to PINS since December so as you can imagine I was excited. I've had some pretty good luck this year on almost all my trips so I was anticipating a great trip. The full moon was approaching and judging by how well others have done this time of year my expectations were big.
Big expectations means I need some big baits. All I had were half a dozen frozen plate size southern rays that I caught earlier this year. The number one objective was to catch fresh bait, jacks if possible. My normal crew would not be joining me this trip. It was me, my gf Ashley, her dog and of course my fishing partner Ares. She was going to have to stick it out for 4 days minimum.
Got to the beach around 5pm and headed south. It was low tide so driving wasn't bad at all. Some soft spots here and there but nothing out of the ordinary. Weed was plentiful from the 0-25 then seemed fishable from the 25-45. The 45-60 was great, minimal weed and clean water to the beach. Saw some mullet deep in the 50s so I grabbed the cast net and with one cast had my bait for the evening.
It was getting dark so as soon as we got to the jetties I threw out some of the live mullet that I had. A few seconds after I set it in the rod holder it takes off then goes slack. I reel it in to find the mullet still intact so I sent them back out. A few minutes later it takes off again. Money! Small but it will make a great bait.
I re-bait and get another hit almost instantly. A few pics and back into the water.
Action was fast so I decide to let Ashley take over for a minute while I set up camp. JACKPOT! Her first Jack.
As it got dark most of the mullet died and all I started catching were catfish. So I called it quits and got things settled in around camp. Meanwhile the dogs were having a blast chasing the crabs around.
Thursday morning we were greeted with a nice surf and no new weed. I got the bait rod out and casted some fish bites tipped with shrimp. While prepping the coffee to get the day started I see the bait rod bent over. At the end of the line was a beautiful pompano, one of the biggest I've caught. Checked out the jetties later in the morning but didn't have any luck.
Ares would continue harassing the crabs throughout the day while the bait rod kept producing table fare. We had a really nice wade gut that had some good fish in it.
Clearly a good pic of my bait rod in action.
The turtle patrol was in full force throughout the day. Cut bait wasn't really working so I walked up the beach in search of some mullet. The only ones I was able to find were about 8" long. Oh well, I hooked them on live and sent them out on a mission.
About 15 mins later I have a fish on! Another oversized redfish. Snapped a few pics and back it went.
Later on in the day weed would show up and made it hard to keep lines out. Water was clear enough to see to the bottom so after wondering around the edge of the wade gut I saw a few rays cruising by. Managed to gig one right by the edge of the water.
Not much action the rest of the day. As evening approached I got baits ready for the evening drop. On the menu was a jack, pompano, frozen ray and the fresh ray I had gigged earlier in the day.
Probably the best baits I've had out all year.
in training.
It's going down tonight!
Only little action we saw were some coyotes checking out our camp as we went to bed. Not a single click the whole night. Two of the lines would get washed in untouched while the other two didn't even get a crab nibble on them.
Woke up to windy conditions and a rough surf. About lunch time with only a spec to show for my troubles I decided to head north a bit and see what the beach looked like. Only went about 10 miles up and came back because of the weed. I felt I had a better chance at keeping baits out in the channel than I did in the surf with all the weed.
The water was nice and clean with a slow moving outgoing tide. Ran the same 3 baits I had the previous night plus a whole whiting I had caught earlier in the day. To my surprise the whiting gets smashed but then got spit out.
I get a heads up on the weather that's coming straight for us. A big line of thunderstorms is moving our way with some heavy rain. I get the camp prepped while hoping I would be interrupted by the lovely sound of a clicker. Doesn't happen, as the evening progressed the tide starting ripping out of the channel and baits were virtually impossible to keep out. So it was back to waiting for the rain, which by the way never came.
Saturday morning the tide was up and the current had slowed down a bit enough for me to get some lines out. Let them soak for about 5 hours with no runs or bite marks on anything. The rain showed up off and on throughout the morning. Packed up around 12 and headed north stopping every once in a while to cast out some cut mullet.
Oh yeah, I was kinda surprised to see this vehicle down here.
I was running extremely low on ice and while I knew Ron and Johnnyreb were on the way I kept heading north eventually running into them as they were headed south. Got some ice from Ron, gave them an update on the beach conditions and we parted ways. Fished a little bit longer then decided to call it.
We found plenty of sand dollars which I thought was pretty cool.
Kinda disappointed that I didn't get into any sharks but it was still a great trip none the less. Got me a nice jack in the bait freezer for next time!
[img][/img]

Thanks I had to fix it with the same post on EC. It was the apostrophe and comma problem when pasting a report in from Word, it cuts off wherever the first comma or hyphen or apostrophe occurs.
WHAT thanks for the epic report with details and pics! _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Nice! Thank you! Very jealous.
I'm really surprised you didn't get rained on. We hung around the 4wd sign and got dumped on all Fri night and Sat morning and it looked real dark further south. |
