I will be taking a trip down to Islamorada in mid June after graduation and dont know too much about fishing the area. I will be flying so to bring a few of my rods, I will be purchasing one of those telescoping rod cases from Academy. Any reccomendation on those? Or a cheaper/safer way to transport them? We will be taking a chartered trip one of the 5 days that we are there, but for the time not on a boat, any tips? I will bring the jigs and such that I think will work, but any specifics? The place we are staying has acess to small canals on one side and then a deep gin clear flat type area. This is what the picture shows atleast. If I were to guess, it will be small snapper/grouper species, as well as bonefish and permit. I am pretty sure I will bring my 9 wt fly rod as well, but I'll have to buy the flies down there, because we arent in Florida and we may not have the same stuff! As far as the guide goes, for next month, what would yall recommend for best fishing? Offshore or the back country? Another big question would be about dining! Anything that is absolutely worth dying for? Thank you all very much for your help! I am sure that we have some natives or atleast some that know the area, so any tips are greatly appreciated!
Zack

Yes, I have stayed there and fished there. Islamorada is great - I stayed in a place that had a pier and boat ramp, I watched the locals use a chum bag full of frozen menhaden, this brings the snapper/ grouper and other fish around. There is a bait shop South of Islamorada on the left southbound.

I brought my ray guards and was going to wade - I saw 3 sharks right by our pier that were very big and I decided I was not going to wade. BE CAREFUL!! the places by the road can get deep, I swam and visibility was low.

I got a Backcounrty guide out of Robbie's Marina (good place to hangout, you can even feed the Tarpon,,,it's a must do). they fish different, roll with it, I caught a big Snook and many Reds, some Mangrive snapper and a massive Barracuda. Look at there website (Robbie's Marina) it will help you pick.

Eats - I ate at all the local dives - grilled fish and aloso there was an Italian or Greek place there that was good - no complaints

Live it up!

Make sure you take plenty of topwaters for the barracuda. Just make long casts over the flats or next to channels and reel in as fast as possible. Don't expect to see any bones or permit (although it is possible). Fishing with a guide, I personally like the backcountry better. Plus you have the chance to see an american croc! For food, I loved Whale Harbor Seafood Buffet. It's not too pricey and was very good. It's the first business on the left (east side) when you get on the island (Islamorada) while heading south.

we just got back from Key West, yes...and fine advice from other posters here so far...

Islamorada has more guides than you can shake a stick at.....pretty much whatever you want to fish for, there's a guide that's "hot" on that bite...ask around there at Islamorada fish company while you eat and feed the tarpon French fries....pop next door to the Worldwide Sportsman for a quick tour as well...Robbies is great too.

channel #2 and Channel #5 will be hot for tarpon, just south of Islamorada....old bridges you can fish from....take some DOA shrimp and rig them as a coon pop and fish them at night right at the edge of the shadow from the piers....hold on! those tarpon are big, and you'll need to get control of them quickly around the bridges...

other than that, yeah, you're just going to find little snappers in channels....what you're really going to find is that despite all the water around you, unless you have a boat, there is actually very little access to fishing in the Keys....

if you're there on the 23rd make sure to attend the full moon party....those are great....

ship your rods via FedEx and carry your reels on...you can put hooks and stuff in your checked bag...
