I guess you could say this trip was set in motion Sunday afternoon. I finally caught Captain Reese with Bill Busters Sportfishing at home that afternoon. We caught up on things with my annual visit. After an hour or so he got a call and said he needed to head down to the dock to meet someone. He invited me along, so off we went. Now Reese was the owner of the last charter boat I ran in my 17 years of offshore guiding. My offshore fishing career ended when I had finally had my fill of the whole charter scene. I tried private boats for three more years, but that was pretty much the same thing, different tune. When we arrived at Woody's I ran into an old friend, Captain Brad Barwise with "Water World Guide Service." When I met Brad he was just starting in the business with a 31' Bertram named, "Water World." I guess you could say he was just getting started as I was finishing-up my career. A few years later, I am guessing he saw the light at the end of the tunnel and realized if he wanted to make a living guiding out of Port Aransas he needed to get into bay fishing and run from the offshore business that was quickly being strangled by fuel prices and new regulations. As I started talking to Brad he showed me a few pictures of recent catches. It looked from the pictures he had became quite a redfish and drum catcher. He asked if I wanted to go on Tuesday and I almost fell in the water saying "YES".

Brad wanted to leave around 7 am. so I figured I would get over to Port A. around 5 am and give Horace Caldwell a quick try for an early season surf speck or two. The water was rough from all the storms last night, but the surf looked clear enough for a little action. I did not catch anything on lures, but I did spot one small school trout under the second light on the north side of the pier. I left Horace Caldwell as the sun was rising and headed to Woody's to meet up with Brad. When I arrived I was told by Brad that Captain Reese was going to ride along and maybe he would even fish. I was almost shocked at this information since I had only seen Reese bay fish once or twice in all the years I have known him. Brad also mentioned another friend would be coming along named Caleb. As we were waiting for Reese I wanted to give Brad a quick golf lesson. I got my wedge out of my trunk and told him I could hit that wedge right off the concrete behind Woody's and land it on the fuel dock hitting it between a gauntlet of $50,000.00 fancy boats and motors. He looked at me like I was crazy as I bounced it off the fuel dock hitting it cleanly off the concrete!

If you look closely, there is a coyote standing along the road to the beach pier. |

Brad said he wanted to get a few fresh menhaden for the reds. One cast was all that was needed! |
