So trying to figure out what all to bring for my memorial week fishing trip.
We will be fishing packery channel, corpus, AP areas, going after reds, trout and anything else that wants to bite. We will probably try both live and artificial baits.
So what all should I bring? hook size and style, artificial baits, live baits, lures, leaders, you name it! |

As far as lures go: Super Spook Jr. in bone and black chartreuse. Mirrolure Shedog and topdog in any silver reflective color or pink color. Mirrolure Mirrodine twitch bait (big trout bait!) in a reflective silver pattern. 4 inch Saltwater Assassin Paddle Tails in pearl, red and white, and texas roach. Texas trout killer in plum/chartruese, glow, and east beast colors. Work on different types of retrieves so that you go all through the water column. Don't just cast and retrieve. Also, take any noisy (Cajun Thunder, H&H, etc...) popping cork rigged with size 1/0 or 2/0 kahle hooks (for live shrimp or gulp shrimp imitations).
Take various types of weights, beginning with 1 oz to about 3 oz depending on the depth and current you plan on fishing. Make your own leaders with some 30 pound mono or flourocarbon leader material. I make dropshot leaders when fishing the bottom where my bait stays about 1 foot off the bottom with a 1-2 oz pyramid sinker on the bottom and have had some luck with that method. Here's what it looks like http://www.yakangler.com/images/stories/articles_april_2012/drop_shot_rig.jpg I also use a bar swivel to attach to my main line. Make a few extra that way if you get slimed by a gaftop or broke off by a redfish you have a backup ready to tie on quickly. Look up the palomar knot so that you can tie your hooks about a foot above your sinker. Also, another trick I've learned is to use a snap swivel where your weight goes, which allows you to change out if you need a heavier or lighter weight.
What I have noticed traveling to Corpus and other areas is that the closer you are to common areas the more you have to have a realistic form of bait. For example, I can't fool the fish in packery near as much as the fish that are way out in the flats somewhere away from civilization. So if you are around a bunch of people, you're going to need live bait and your rig is going to have to get to the fish properly. Buy a popping cork that you have to make your own leader line for and try a variety of different lengths of leaders until you find the fish. Start of deep so you can clip your line shorter and shorter as needed. Also, my old boss used to swear by a lemon rig. Look up how to make your own. You will need a float, hook, three way swivel, and a good amount of line. He says when you're jetty fishing its a great way to go. Basically everything I told you is what works for me when the fish are biting. Good luck.
Just saw your second post. If you're in a boat you can travel around. Look for baitfish flopping around and birds hovering above the water. That's about all I know. |

I agree with Ironmanstan! Makes carrying around your tackle that much easier!

It's not sexy but the plain old weedless gold spoon is hard to beat. Ive caught over 100 reds this past month on a gold spoon (and plenty of accidental trout). Even when Im fishing with other baits Ive always got a rod that always has a gold spoon tied on.
Unless Im in the surf then it's a silver spoon.
Amazing how little love the classic and highly effective lure gets. |

| Mr. Gdavis pretty much covered it. And X2 on the fishbites. Oh, and also get some plastics in chicken on a chain or hot chicken colors. I think what you will find is kinda what IMS was saying. keep it simple and cast with whatever gives you confidence. |
