What a freaking day.
Water was a solid 9/10.
We arrived at BHP shortly after 7 AM, and already, it was ON! We saw S'macks hitting the deck left and right about 3/4 way down the pier and on the T head.
We were armed with a quart of live shrimp from Clem's and spinning gear with popping corks. We weren't there 2 minutes and Kim already had a nice S'mack coming in. Check this out...first fish of the day:
We were looking for Pomps, as about this time last year, I absolutely KILLED the Pomps doing the same thing...and we found some...well, TWO for the day but we saw other folk about 1/2 way down the pier bringing them in with regularity:
Here's a HUGE S'mack my wife caught...at first we thought it might be a Cero, but there's no stripe.
Later on, I got tired messing around with the popping cork and started playing around with a 1 oz. silver crippled herring....and POW, I got slammed ...talk about fun, decent sized S'macks hitting that thing is just awesome.
Here's evidence for 'CSI BOB HALL PIER' of the Mackerel Massacre:
The day's haul...18 Mackerel and 2 pompano.
We gave away about 4 or 5 other fish...probably could have stayed and limited out, I know others did...but we had more than enough, and more than I wanted to clean (I did)...we're both happy fixing to eat some Pompano tonight and S'macks for the next two weeks.

WOW.....now those are some excellent catches.....!!!
Great work....
Looks like I went to the wrong place this morning. Went to North Packery jetty before work and got skunked. Barely any bait in the water. Oh well... _________________ (( Living the life I was born to live.....

Are you sure that big smack isn't a king mackerel? The lateral line drops sharply like on a king. _________________ certified whiting slayer |

Nicely done! From where we were on the beach, we could barely see the tip of the pier through the fog. I had a hunch that people were hooking up on from, given how good the conditions looked. Looks like you two will be eating good. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

It has the trademark yellow spots. Not a king just a freaky sterioded out spanish. About the biggest I have seen. |

We went out to the 4 mile rigs yesterday. We caught several undersized grouper and some keeper snapper. Moved to lone star about 9 AM. While there we noticed the birds were thick over the weed line. So we trolled and caught a dozen s'macks. Sent them all back to fight another day, except the snapper we ate last night. Grouper and snapper we all caught on pin perch. Only color we could get the s'macks to hit was silver and pink.
Looks like weed will be heavy on the beach his weekend if it isn't already. |
