I haven't had any luck with the little chances i get to fish. I kept my eye on the weather and swell info and finally saw a window of opportunity a couple of days before the front. I took a day off and headed to port a from san antonio. stopped at a local area to throw the net and bagged some shrimp and croaker. Also stopped and bought some more live shrimp. Got to the jetty boat early and arrived to birds working the surf. S mack Action was non-stop until i left at 230pm. they were busting the surf the whole time. I used everything i had. when they would tire of one bait i switched to another. used several spoons, hard baits, as well as live bait. a combo that worked well was using a spoon with a gulp grub on the hook. Amost every cast was a hit. one of the best days i've had in a long time. Ended up using all my live bait and gulps. Had to leave to start driving back to S.A. Landed several mackeral but only 7 keepers. A 3 ft blacktip shark took half of one of my macks before i was able to land it. After seeing the shark I took out my big rod and rigged a big croaker. after an hour or so it took off screaming but i didnt hook up. Jack C were also visible working with the macks. Sheephead bite was on also. All keepers were in the 21 to 22 inch range and caughts several smaller ones. was fun alternating from macks and sheepies. Lost one of the biggest sheephead i've seen in the rocks. There was a guy close to the beach at the second gut who landed a jack while i was there but other than that i didnt see much action from anyone else. Only about 5 of us on the whole jetty and I was the only one left at 230. Usually i have a young brown pelican or great blue heron giving me company, but today was a ruddy turnstone. that was a first for me:

Its been so long that I have caught smacks but I filleted and fried em up like normal tasty! Seems that I'm learning that the difference between dark meat and white meat in birds is the same for fish. _________________ Wish I was fishing. |
