Anybody ever seen this or have an explanation for it. I hope the reason is because it's been eating alot of shrimp/crustaceans.
My brother caught it at the port a jetty this past sunday.

Never seen a whiting that color before. That thing looks huge in that picture, how big was it?

Depends on which whiting it is. My guess it that is a Southern Kingfish noted for the longer pectoral fins and mottled color.

There are two types, southern and gulf. The silver ones are gulf kingfish and yours is a southern kingfish. Those are the ones I always catch in Nueces Bay. Smile A pile of Southern Kingfish off of Indian Point Pier.

We also have a third species found here, the northern kingfish (Menticirrhus Saxatilis).

Fukushima radiation mixed with Corexit dispersant. Makes for quite the gumbo!!! Laughing Laughing

Honestly, I don't have a good answer. With it being caught on the Port A jetties, it might just be a sun-burned Spring Break whiting down from one of the mid-west colleges...... Cool

That's what first came to my mind. Haha. Wicked looking whiting though!

I've caught the 2 whitings and southerns have had some yellow but this thing is tripping me out.
I wasn't there and looking at the leader in the pic I'd say it was about 10".
I think they let it go
