Hey guys,
Headed out to find a place to fish down SBP about 8am or so. I went by the pier first just to look and see how it was and it was packed already...so started to drive down the beach but as soon as I passed the pier..the sand was totally soft...I have a 2wd tacoma and I was having trouble already...and then I look down and see that there are 2 other vehicles stuck already. I made it to the beach and drove back a bit and parked...then I went to help push these vehicles out to the beach...they followed me out.
I was thinking of going the other way around...the entrance by PINS but I already wasted enough time so I headed to the Packery Channel park...a place I have seen off the highway and always wanted to try. Well..it was great...the dunes slowed the wind a bit...and the sheepie bite was on...huge too. I was going for some big uglies but didn't catch any. I had 3 great hits on my big rod but they unhooked as I was reeling them in...bummer.
I ended up catching about 15 or so sheepies...about half were huge. I released all of them since I dont know how to skin these suckers...and I heard they are good eating..(yes..no..?..).
All in all...it was a freakin' beautiful day for fishing...
This weekend looks even better... _________________ (( Living the life I was born to live.....

| sheapies arnt bad to eat at all. i personally prefer the smaller ones over the bigger ones for table fare. i dont catch them all that often so i cant tell you how to clean them. iirc you clean them like a snapper, scrape scales off with a spoon and then flay them out. |

| use a serated knife and cut the skin around the edges and then filet as you would any other fish. Once you get past the skin and the ribs the hard part is done. |

Thanks for the report - sounds like you hit it just right.
X2 on what texgator said. Right along the dorsal fin there is a space between the fin and the scales that you can get a knife into without cutting through a ton of scales. Fillet em just like a snapper or drum. I personally dont mess with scaling , just run a knife between the filet and the skin to remove. Yummy as ceviche, good fried too. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

Nice! Good Job!
Next time you run into that "problem" let me know. I will literally meet you at Clems to show you how to clean them. I may not be the best fisherman in the world, but I do know how to clean some fish.
To me, Sheepshead are better than Redfish and Trout by far (just my personal preference). Oh, and I seriously second the ceviche recommendation! _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

I heard that. The way I look at it is eating fish really takes the edge off how expensive it can be. I mean I'm constantly buying terminal tackle, gas, respooling reels, etc. A dern corky is like $8.00! So, spending less money at HEB really adds up over time. I buy a lot less cow and bird when harvesting fish regularly (and responsibly of course). BUT, then my wife goes to Kohls and that's another story
I'm happy to help! _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |
