...Red Flag Warning in Effect for South Texas Today...

...Gale Warning in Effect for the Bays and Coastal Waters Tod...

Timing and Overview:

A cold front will continue to move across South Texas early this morning (25 February 2013), then across the adjacent Coastal Waters. In response to the front, cooler, drier and windy conditions are expected. The combination of low relative humidity values and very windy conditions will result in extreme fire weather conditions over South Texas from late this morning through the afternoon hours. Thus, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for South Texas Today. This fire danger threat will dissipate this evening as wind speeds diminish. After frontal passage, wind speeds over the Bays and Coastal Waters are expected to increase to Gale force. Thus, a Gale Warning is in effect for the Bays and Coastal Waters Today.

South Texas Impacts:

Wind: Over South Texas, sustained north to northwest wind 25 to 35 mph with gusts from 45 to 50 mph late this morning through the afternoon. Over the Coastal Waters, anticipate northwest wind 30 to 35 knots with gusts to 45 knots, this afternoon.

Relative Humidity: Values will rapidly fall late this morning to a minimum of 10 to 20% inclusive by early afternoon.

Impacts: Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Substantial resistance to control efforts will occur. Exercise care with respect to all outdoor activities that could inadvertently cause wildfires. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Mariners in small craft are strongly urged to remain in port Today.

Thanks for the report Tyler. I had planned on taking my yak out on the river for a test drive but I know them winds are going to be funneled into there with these conditions and would give me some trouble. Guess I'll use this time to work on an anchor trolly system.

The front hit here about 40 minutes ago. I heard a knock at the office window and thought it was a cat. Just the wind. It is blowing but it cleared things out.

I was at Lyssy and Echol feed store looking at tomato plants when a big gust came thru...
blew a deer feeder across the lot and bent it up... also tipped over some big tower deer blinds.
weather site says 40mph steady and 55mph gusts...
wanted to do a surf trip, that's on hold, now Laughing
edit... it's faster now at 11am

It's blowing steady at 45 now and gusting to 58. It's 43 F and every once in a while a cloud bank will blow over and it will snow for 2 or 3 minutes and then the sun will shine. I am enjoying a bowl of cookies and cream ice cream right now...only thing enjoyable about today so far. Very Happy

It just keeps getting windier here on the Island...steady 32mph and gusting to 52+ mph. There are actually wind driven waves washing over people's lower docks, and waves crashing into the canal bulkheads with foam and spray blowing over the tops. Bait buckets, dock bumpers, noodles and patio furniture are floating by in the canals. Plus, you can see and taste the dust in the air. Guess a lot of the farmers north of here are losing their topsoil.

I'm still in Rockport and the horizon is brown from all the blowning dirt, dust and sand.
This wind is CRAZY!

I had just walked past the tree and got about 10ft from it and happened to turn around right when this happened. Luckily it was all dead and rotted so it was pretty light and I could pick it up no problem. Sure did add to my burn pile which is going to make a very nice bonfire when we can finally burn.

Didn't get any pics of the canals but they were rocking and rolling as mentioned above.

I'd say we had just enough wind to blow the tops off of the waves... Cool

Had just a little bit of dust airborn out of the fields on 136... visibility under 200ft.

It did lead to a pretty nice sunset on the way back to Houston though over Lake Texana.
