So...after the Cowboys win...(a wins a win, right) and decided to do some fishing. Went to the Packery Channel but too windy and lots of weeds. So I went to the base pier for a bit...and caught a mess of sand trout that I gave to an old Asian lady. And while I was reeling one in...I felt a "thump" and when I finally got it up...there was only the head left...something bit the fish in half..!! So I knew there was something out there...well...on my last throw before I was going home...my rod got hit good...and I hooked it...and this is what it was...so cool...Smile
Another great day on the island, Maun...

Used to be great for small sand trout and undersized specs. Problems recently though. Some anglers keep anything of any size (yes, sublegal specs included).

NAS Pier maintenance is dismal. Restrooms are filthy and even closed at times due to repairs not attempted. Also, last time there to snoop, there were only two lights working on pier. Some others had been removed (fallen down) or were out. The lights often are aimed at the pier walkway, not toward the water.

I have discussed these issues with the MWR team twice. No predictions for better times were offered.

If you're destined to go there, start after 10:30 PM and fish until 2 AM. Rougher water is better, because it pushes the shrimp toward the pier, which is solid concrete, not pilings. Fish the rough water side. When the specs start smackin' shrimp, the sand trout wait below for the scraps. When croaker are running, there are many caught, but smaller sized. If there is a low tide, you might as well skip stones on the surface for something to do.

This pier is fished regularly every night by certain groups of anglers, who at times are lined up shoulder to shoulder under the lights. However, most people there are friendly and courteous.

Thats the vietnamese for you. Its a shame that the vets they married let that happen. Its worse in the winter time b/c the northern state retired vets with their vietnamese wifes come down and camp on base in the RV park next to the pier. That pier was the 1st place I ever fished in my life when I was around 5-6 years old, and I remember vietnamese ladies buying me ice cream for catching and giving them sand trout. Sadly, they keep anything with gills. This post isnt ment to be anything against vets or vietnamese people, but its the pure facts of the situation on the 2 piers on base, non-sugar coated! I appreciate vets and their service, but its not a hall pass to keep non-legal fish.

I used to weld with a bunch of Vietnamese guys and knew a bunch of V. shrimpers, man they make some good eats out of all that stuff with gills. Sat down at their tables many times in Rockport and chowed down and sipped Cognac as that was the preferred drink. That was the old schoolers. I can't say about the newer generation of American, Vietnamese. Question They probably dine at McDonald's.

Witnessed this first hand in October, very sad. Oversize/undersize, gamefish/trashfish, they keep. Talked to one guy, apparently they use this tactic to make fish sauce. Fill up bathtubs full of fish and let it ferment, no meat is used, HUGE WASTE and I think drastically affects fish populations, some kind of action needs to be taken soon on this kind of "fishing".

It's not just Vietnamese. Koreans are there most times. We used to fish alongside some regularly.

This is not to say that other nationalities don't fish there illegally. Since others usually speak English and don't look Oriental, there're not as easy to identify.

We were there one night when an American Texan kept a 53" black drum. We and others told him that it had to be set free. He kept it. (He was a big guy and with 4 buddies.) One Korean woman kept pestering him for the fish head, so she could make soup. She got the head before he left.

Anybody can apply for a MWR Pass to get access to the NAS Pier. Military service is not required. We're members of the Navy League, which allows us access. (My eyesight wasn't good enough to be drafted into the Vietnam War, so I didn't have any military service. But we continue to support the military in part by our membership in the Navy League.)

In other words, the sub-legal fishers might not all be spouses of the military. They could be anybody from anywhere.

Yes I was hoping this wasn't going to get into an ethnic conversation about generalities of folks as a group. Yes I have been fishing with Chinese and Vietnamese folks on piers squid fishing in the northwest and have seen some of the behavior listed but please let's not get into this. You have a problem please call Operation Game Thief 800 792 GAME that covers any ethnicity violating game rules. Thanks and nice catch YakinHappy!
