After many weeks of work, I'm almost finally done building my BBQ pit. It's made of 1/4" steel pipe and is 20" diameter and is a total of 60" long. I showed it to Tyler today. Before I roll it out of the garage onto the deck, I need to have it sandblasted and then painted with high temperature paint. It weighs somewhere between 500 and 600 pounds. Does anybody out there know someone who could do a job this size? I can truck it to their location and leave it there as long as necessary.

You don't need to sandblast it. All I did was get mine really really hot (500 - 600 degrees) and painted it with a brush and crisco. It shines for a while but it is like seasoning a cast iron skillet. It looks great...Adios

Would the baked on crisco resist saltwater spray. I have a canal front home and plan to put the pit on the deck. The other problem is the legs, shelf, and wheels. They wouldn't be subjected to the high temperatures required to bake the crisco on.

I built bbq pits and sold them for years . Yes a good blasting and painting makes them look good for a week or so. However the expansion and contraction will eventually breakdown and crack any paint you put on them, then add in the wonderful salty atmosphere we love so much. If you want to keep your pit nice buff it when you think it needs it with a wire cup brush and use high temp paint in the 1200 deg range on the surface. Or season it as skipper does.

IMS, I had intended to use the high temperature paint on it and I like the idea of using the cup wire brush. It's just that there is so much area to attempt to brush, some of which is in very narrow areas that using the cup brush is impractical. I just thought it was easy to have somebody sand blast it and then it's nice and shiny and ready for the high temperature paint. What do you think?

Go for it. There is a place at crosstown and 44 going toward the airport that might do the job. Other than that I don't know anyone anymore. I used to run a welding business on the side and did pretty good at it. I just got tired and burned out on trying to fix everyones rusted out crap for a good price. Plus I'm a perfectionist and that didn't help either. Very Happy However I will always do small repair for my friends and such until I can't see or run a straight smooth bead anymore. Very Happy

If you are going to blast it, have them prime it with demetcoat 4 and it will never rust ever. I have a piece of plate that I got when I worked offshore 20 years ago and not a speck of rust. The welder a used to complain because they couldn't burn it of with a torch. Your legs will not rust and you can still crisco the pit to turn it black... Adios

Lonestar Welding off of Agnes. Talk to Tom. 289-0474. They did my backyard pit and my trailered pit. Outstanding work and the paint still looks the same today as it did when they painted it.

Don't paint the inside. The outside will be fine because it doesn't come off... Adios

Harbor freight has a sandblaster on sale for $59

We have used one for years. I would recommend the aluminum oxide blasting media, to eliminate the possibility of silicosis. I get my media at Clemtex.
