Somebody from my home town recorded this video from my old fishing grounds back on Long Island. Absolute devastation. I had planned on fishing for stripers this thanksgiving when I went back to visit family. The boat ramp we used is completely destroyed, along with the rest of the south shore (and the Jersey shore as well).

Instead I will be spending my time ripping drywall and carpet from my sisters non-liveable home that had 4 feet of water.

Sorry to hear about family impact...always "brings it home" as a reminder to those of us who live in hurricane zones.

Thoughts are with your family as they pick up the pieces Luke. Wife has a cousin on Long Island. Things are fine, but still no power.

i feel very bad that they are having to go through the pains of a hurricane. as yall know living down here we go through this ate least once or more a yr. i really hope these people are not counting on fema for help because i know from what we went through with ike that they are as much help as a flea on a dog. they paid people whose homes were washed away nothing left then came back later and demanded their money back saying there wasnt enough damage even though all that was left was the slab. we had over million without power in tx and louisana . and as for those generators fema handing out no one got one from ike. i have sent a donation to salvation army as i know 100 percent of my money goes to helping those whereas red cross their management are paid high salaries so some of what you give goes to that. sorry to sound cynical but we go through this all along the coast and it is just a matter of time before any of us get hit

Go help your sister she must be happy knowing you are coming to help. It was a bad deal all the way around for those folks up there.

Luke - Sad video. It was hard to watch that marina with all the tangled boats that already been wrapped for the winter. How did your dad's whaler ride out the storm?

We will not be traveling for Thanksgiving, so I have boat and will travel if you're up here in November.

Morgan and I buy our produce down the street from a vegetable stand that gets the majority of their produce from Long Island. The Long Island farmers had bluefish in their tomato patches. The farmers insist the broccoli and cauliflower need no salt when cooked due to the storm surge.

Fortunately my sister as good insurance, both flood and homeowners. Will help cover the flood damage, but not the mold damage. Thems the lumps.

Not holding out for Fema. Supposedly things are much better with them now since Katrina/Ike. Many of the kinks worked out. But for the most part we don't expect much.

Raiderred - I feel for those farmers. That salt will hurt them for years. The bluefish on the other hand (pretty insane to hear where they wound up) is actually good fertilizer. Wink We have been burying bluefish carcasses in our veggie garden up there for 20 years. Works great. Where are you and Morgan now?

Fortunately the whaler was on a trailer next to the house (maple tree branch missed it by 3 feet!). Most of the ramps where we launch however have been destroyed, but there may be one or two on the south shore that are intact.

Power is coming back slowly, most are still on generators. We were well prepared and had 50 gallons of gas (now in short supply) to power it. Must of the electricity is being used to power pumps to get the water out of the house before mold becomes widespread.

We count our blessings that we weren't impacted as much as others - many lost their houses entirely - others lost lives. Tom, please send our regards to your family in NJ. I'm very sorry to hear about their damaged property.

The material things can be replaced. We are fortunate that everyone was safe through the storm. Its the memories of the places I used to fish as a kid, seeing the shops and piers, the party boat fleets, the baymen's boats - seeing all that is what really hits home.

We are in Montville, CT which is a 15 min drive for Morgan to UCONN Avery Point. I moved the Aquasport close to the house. Several trees took out the fence, but thankfully none of them came close to house, cars, or boat.

Want to get out there this weekend for the first fishing trip in CT as the blackfish bite was really strong before the storm. Still learning this fishery.

Blackfish should be good for a few more weeks. They are some weird looking fish, but fight great Stripers were red hot pre-storm. This time of year is the herring migration, and if you find them it can be absolute pandemonium with bass and big blues. National geographic type stuff.

I hope you guys are settling in nicely up there. Big change in pace from TX as I'm sure you are finding out. One thing that is very different up there is that things are very predictable and cyclical throughout the year. Its a shorter fishing season but when species are running, the fishing is off the hook. Once you figure out the seasonal patterns, thats pretty much it. Its less of a cat and mouse game like it is down here. I have no doubts in my mind that you will be catching monster bass in no time.
