I was just wondering what lights had to be on your kayak while night fishing? What color? Where do they go? Etc. Thanks in advanced!

I don't know if they are required, but if you are out in the water after dark, it might be a good idea to have some kind of lantern to let those power boats that go zzzzooooommmmm by that you are there. _________________ FishLady

yep.
Don't get the small scotty light. You will regret the purchase when on the water. Get the tallest and brightest 360 light you can. Spend a little money and keep yourself safe. I bought the scotty small light and I've been run down twice near bird island. Requirements for kayaks are basically, pfd, sound device, and lights in the dark hours.

Thats the one I bought. I don't really like it but it meets the requirement. |

Once while returning to port at full throttle in open water, it looked like nobody was on the water except for a mile or so distant freighter.
Then whoops out of nowhere, we nearly broad sided, within 10 feet, a 30 ft sailboat with only a lantern on deck. The skipper said he was not under power, so nav lights were not required.
We exchanged unpleasant remarks and rude hand gestures. Then I sped off.
Yes, kayaker, get a light as bright and as high off the water as possible. Your life is in jeopardy otherwise. |

I picked up a nice one at Academy last year for less then $20....it was camoflage and was made for a boat but it took batteries....D size...it was very bright and 360 deg...and i just put a few wraps of electrical tape on the bottom of the light pole and it fit perfect in one of the braces for the scotty holder. And then later I just added a few U-brackets i got at Home Depot for like 4 for a buck...and mounted them to my kayak crate...next to my Texas Kayak Fisherman flag...
If you have a crate...you can get pretty creative on what you can put on it. _________________ (( Living the life I was born to live.....

After what most of us posted and advised about lights, you're still asking: "Would it still be a good idea to get em?"
I read that latest post of yours and cannot believe that you asked this question.
Like, hello, are you there?
Operating any boat (or kayak) or even wading without a visible light is simply DANGEROUS! Power boats could sink you in a split second if you decide not to let them see that you're on the water after dark. Some flats boats can top 60mph speeds.
OK, all another kayaker might do is bump into you, but the power boats are what you need to worry about.
Truth is that I fear for your safety and the safety of others. Hopefully you will either use a light at night or use your kayak only in daylight hours. |

I'm sure he meant nav lights. You know the green and red ones... Adios

You know you can't gig in November, right?

I think he posted that link as what not to get. That looks like the little safety light for life jackets. That little thing can be seen for miles, but it's not very bright so won't do you any good in terms of visible light. I've seen the one YakHappy referred to, probably be a better way to go. I have some verticle rodholders in my crate, you could just slide that puppy in there and be done with it. _________________ JJ |

Those are the lights in talking about. I'm not dumb enough to go without lights. I just wanted to make sure i go with the right ones. I have no idea what the nav lights are even used for so that's why I asked if it would be a good idea or not. I don't want to be mistaken as a bigger boat for having those when I shouldn't, etc. _________________ -Fred- |
