| Jus got my 1st boat this past Aug. and I've seen some of the same boats out them on schools of fish in differnt locations. How do they find em ? By accident I passed a school of blk drum one day and turned around and caught a couple had no idea they were there untill I was rt over them. What am I suppose to look for in the water I'm thinking of hireling a guide to show me how to fish but I dnt know if its gonna be what I expected and be out 100's of $ and still can't find the fish..[/img] |

I have no idea. I have fished with many very experienced fishermen. They seem to be just as surprised as me when they happen upon a big school.
It might just be part of their show.

Don't stress - it takes time on the water. Keep fishing, keep fishing, keep fishing. Don't get frustrated. Guides can show you little things to look for, tell you about patterns, etc, but nobody can tell you how to find the fish everytime. Just keep at it, spend as much time as possible on the water, keep your eyes (and ears, and nose) open, and you will find that you will start getting into more fish, whether it be schools or drum, tailing reds, or a good trout bite.
That time that you accidentally strolled upon the fish - what was it like? where were you? what time of day was it, how deep was it, what was the clarity like, what was the date, was the water warm, was there bait, what kind of bait, were they on the move fast or just feeding. Don't answer on here, but just think about it.Never stop asking yourselves these questions. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

| I use to write dwn all that info every time I went out and I stopped coz it didn't seem to make a difference. If I caught and I went back the exact same time, place, and nothing. I jus thought there was something that I haven't noticed yet. Going out tomorrow and see what happens |

| Most comes from time on the water. Just get out there and play with whatever conditions the bay gives you. |

I am relatively new to fishing too, only been boating two years. It is all about adapting. Find a good bait stand and make friends with the employees. They see the catches and know where they come from. I am sure they would give you advice if you are a customer.
Good Luck and keep on trying! _________________ JJ |

Luke, I couldn't have put it better. I get a surprised look from my customers all the time when I say "we've got to go find them first". Many think you just pull up to the Honey Hole and load up. That only happens once every other year. I often remind them that fish have tales and swim off. Then they see how big the Lagoon is. As the others have said, keep at it. Keep the fishing journal going. Each little entry with each little detail, will start to form the big picture for you. _________________ Adrift on the Mother Lagoon |

| Buy charts, watch the birds, learn where the structures are, lurk on this web site and make lots of friends.. And as already stated, make notes, notes and more notes. Just my .02 worth... |

Fish feed when the tide is moving so there is an app for that. (ISolunar)
Wind and current push bait against structure. There is an app for that (Navionics)
I like when water goes from deep to shallow and the current and wind pushes bait up against the structure
Birds working is the easiest way to find feeding fish
Drift fish is 5 feet of water over grass
Fish holes
You catch more with live bait at first
Have a marker buoys in the boat and drop it to set up your drifts. _________________ Fin in the wind |

Get familiar with your boat and its limitations. Then focus on the fishing. Luke had a good post. Use live shrimp under a cork and start the learning curve/confidence. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |
