We fish in the Packery Channel and not in the surf. Fishing in the channel is good. Surf probably is as well.
I don't know if fires are officially allowed or not, but we usually take wood down for a small fire and have never had any issues.
There is almost always someone on the beach with a huge bonfire. Many times there are more than one and the sky has a distinct orange glow up and down the beach (especially on weekends). If there is a burn ban, it certainly isn't enforced.
This is just my observation; hopefully someone knows for sure. |

There is currently no burn ban for Nueces county at this time.
Just be responsible with your fire, and it should not be a problem.
Even during a burn ban, one can have a fire for cooking, heating, or religious purposes. |

Lucky to live 5 minutes from the south pack jetty, try to go an hour a day if its nice out there.
Live finger mullet on the bottom seems to be the ticket for Reds. Caught from both channel and beach side towards the end of the rocks.
Good luck! |

Poof! and it was gone.
Thought we saw greatness, but it was too fleeting to be sure. _________________

High winds have resulted in big surf. We tried Packery channel side last night, and rods were shaking too much to detect any bites. We left after half hour.
You might want to seek out sheltered waters for this weekend. Or stay home and come another time.
If you can get on the NAS, the people on the pier there were boxing small croakers last night. We saw 24 or so fishing the first light. None got biteds while we watched for a few minutes, but it was low tide. 3 people were somewhat cleaning a cooler packed with croaker that were caught earlier in the day. No ice - just croaker. Never figured out why most Koreans do not ice down their catch. BTW, most on pier were Korean. We have fished with several of them before. One lady is deadly on catching ribbon fish.
We met some friends there who were on their way to Port A to fish the ship channel. They did well on sand trout. |
