This is the first year thatbinhave used it. What is the life expectancy of this stuff?
I used to change my line about once a year,depending on what happens.

| Probably depends on use, but I've been able to get a couple of years out of Power Pro Braid. And to be honest, I'm not even sure it needed to be changed, I just did it to be on the safe side. |

I would inspect it...if it looks good, keep using it. I have a couple 4/0 that have had the same pp on them for about 4 yrs. On my trout rods, if i dont see any frays, or any potential bad spots...i dont mess with it.

I have been wondering about this too. My line has lightened in color due to use, but doesn't appear any weaker than it was the day I got it. Power Pro is good stuff

| I don't know if it matters but after using some braid on one reel for a few uses, I'll then spool it on another reel, so the other end gets used. I'll also trim off several yards off of the end after a few trips. |

| I do the same thing fnG. Lasts a lot longer that way. I also use to be a staunch PP user, but after switching to FINS windtamer that is all I use now. To me it seems to fish as well, but with less knots. That's just my preference. |

Zia got me using windtamer and i never looked back
used it through a year of abuse including a harsh offshore season...when this year is up i will flip the braid and the end that has been tied closer to the spool will be whats tossed out....
one 150 yard spool of 30lb test will last me 2 years....

The stuff is made of kevlar...it will last forever provided it is not frayed or cut a bit. When it gets fuzzies...that is not fraying. I have some power pro on one of my curados that is probably from circa 2005...it's WHITE as all the pigment has come out of it, and it's plenty strong.
Also, braid does not have memory...if you feel so compelled, you can take it off and put it back on the other way...and use that last 100 or so yards that has never seen the light of day.

Big head is right both kevlar and spectra are synthetics and the color is only a coating that is put on during production. The product is white in color when in its natural state. Color loss on it has no effect on strength, but the fraying will continue until it is weakened, a long process, can be prevented but just too much work to prevent it on fishing line. I was involved in the original testing with it in the archery industry.

I like Fireline. I get more wind knots on spinners with power pro but Fireline does fade but it doesn't seem to affect the strength. I hear some cheap guys reverse it putting the backing stuff at the front  with the less faded stuff on top though since I only use a topshot I don't do that, yet

Only one problem there: super braid lines are NOT made from Kevlar and haven't been for about 20 years. DuPont was behind the curve when Spiderwire hit the market (1987) using Spectra (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) but they had years of Kevlar experience (they invented the stuff), so they jumped into the market with a Kevlar super braid. That didn't take long to fizzle out due to Kevlar's abrasive nature, even on itself!!!! The stuff will cut and wear into itself and everything else under load/with use, and it also has the "quality" of eventually breaking when bent back and forth in the same place because of this.... kind of like sheet metal. The stuff was BRUTAL on rod line guides and reel line guides.
Spectra on the other hand is so darn slippery that one has to be VERY CAREFUL in picking which knots to use, and this is also the main reason why the Palomar knot works so well with it, and also why dyes fade so quickly on the exposed portions: IT"S SLICK!!!! 
Both degrade over time with UV ray exposure with Kevlar being fairly bad and UHMWPE not nearly as much, but the darker coating help here as the darker the color, the less UV penetration. It's not UV proof, but in the general life span on a reel and constant clipping away of the business end it could probably be considered as close to it;
