Wifey has had really good luck with her two Penn Sargus reels. Cheaper than a Battle but similar build without a few bells and whistles. The kids use them too and they've been dunked more than I'd like to admit and dragged through the sand several times each. Definitely tough reels but still smooth.

Welcome Al! I like the Daiwa BG 15s around 85 at Roy's. They are what Billy Sandifer used on all his surf charters. Not too hard to work on etc.

Go to Cabelas' online site and check out their Salt Striker line of reels. I have two and have been very pleased with their performance and durability. In my experience they're a lot of reel for the price.

P.S. I see they're on sale right now.
