| Is there anywhere close to cc to shoot up to 1000 yards? I've never done it but had a rifle built last year in a .308 win and would like to work on getting out to that range |

Heck, you should see the Quigley competitions they have with old blackpowder cartridge rifles. Hitting targets a 500 meters with 19th century technology. Now those are marksmen. Heck they even shoot at Buffalo Silouettes at 1000 yards. Your .308 should be able to make it though the larger the slug you send down range, the better. Heavy VLD bullets will be the best. _________________ Where's the March Hare???.. |

| The .308 caliber was the caliber of choice for years for the 1000 yard competitions. Now some guys are dropping down to a 6.5mm bullet in different wildcat loads. It's definately feasible. |

Totally do able with a 308. I shoot my 308 out to 1500yards JUST SHOOTING NOT HUNTING BIG DIFFERANCE!!!!! I shoot LR and LR HUNT all the time. I shoot some of my rifles out to 2200yards and I have made kills well over a 1000 yards and have some on video at a 1000 yards NOT WITH A 308. A 308 is not the best thing to be LR hunting with maybe out to 400-500. But to just try and shoot and learn the LR stuff its one of the best out there.
Paper does not care how much energy you have down range animals do. The rifle I LR hunt with has the same energy at a 1000 yard as a 308 does at the muzzle. I have been doing this LR stuff for a long time now over 15 years and have a ton of money invested in it. Lots of fun but lots of money to do it right. |

yeah, paper dont care or run off.
BUT, wow, any little variable does a number on a bullet at those distances.

shot a BB doe at 700 yards, if you practice it, and conditions call for it, why not?
bossman killed a Barasinga cow at 1,005 yards over the weekend with his custom .338 lapua, we shoot every time we are at the ranch with percision too...technology helps a lot as well....but like i said before, conditionis have to be right for extreme shots. _________________ Trophy whitetail and exotic hunts on some of the finest ranches Texas has to offer, www.mcoutfitterstexas.com

Wind is the biggest thing you have to worry about. humidity does very little but being able to read the wind is what separates shooters. I can take any body that can hold a rifle steady and shoot with out moving and get them to ring the bell at 1000 9 times out of 10. as long as I'm setting up the rifle and there is little to no wind. put a 10-15mph wind in the picture and it really hard for someone to hit it even with me setting it up. Cause when you r looking through the scope you r looking at a lot more than just the target. You can't just take a wind reading at where u r and expect it to be right there is alot more going on down range. |

| PM me your information. I can hook you up with a lnog range crew. They are some of the best in the country. Why I say that is because some of them have placed in the National championship and one of them won 1st in Texas state F class shooting and another got 1st at rifles only in kingsville and another an NRA championshipm and another Texas State years ago..... Not sure of all of the titles these guys hold other than what I mentioned but they are good. It is a private ranch and they shoot competitions every month. 1000 yards. |

If you'd like to shoot at 1000 yards...I don't know where...but the .260 Remington will out perform the .308 every day and twice on sunday at extended ranges.
the .308 will do just fine. As someone mentioned, it was the round of choice for 1000 yard competition, but everything it does, the 6.5./.260 caliber does better.
One word of caution about the 6.5 family of calibers...some of the wildcat/magnums, while offering amazing performance, will burn up a barrel in a hurry...they have faster twist rates to stabilize longer bullets and when pushed HARD, will wear that barrel out.
Also, rebarreling your .308 to .260 is not difficult...as the .260 REM is based on the .308 case...just buy a good match grade barrel and have a smith attach it and bed it to your stock...cook up some good handloads and let'er rip!
