Ive got a penn 4/0w and was wondering what a good long casting surf rod would be. My brother is telling me to look for a jawbone, but I was wondering what else there was out there.

Go talk to the guys at Roy's Bait and Tackle. They have Tica, Lamiglass, and a few others. They are pretty good at letting you know what will work and what won't. You can also talk to Nick at Breakaway Tackle on Rodd Field also. HDX rods are hard to beat but expensive.

x2

They (Roys) have a few consignment rods that would be perfect for a 4/0w.

What length, and action do y'all recommend? Also, one piece or two, or does that matter much

I've heard that about the magnets. I've got a couple of buddy's that have them, your right about casting them. They are tough. I think with some practice I can do ok with it.

I will tell you what I got. I have a Daiwa Sealine 40x-sha on a Tica Dophin 12' rod heavy action. I am pitching 6oz weights about 150 yards. More practice and I should get to 200 yards. Haven't played with any of the Penn reels except a 309M. Anyway, talk to them at Roy's. They may be able to Mag your Penn 4/0 if you are worried about backlash.

Switch that 40 for a 30 and you'll hit 200 mark easy. Braid backing with a mono topshot will give you all the line you need.

I have 4 Tica tc2 rods...2 11.5' rods and 2 1011 footers...they sre a great performing rod that can handle the rigors of PINS easily.

Switching to a 30 isn't the problem. Need to work on my cast. Not getting the rod to load just right yet. Either casting to early or to late. Once I get the timing down, I can add more power to my cast. Belive me, I am 6'5" tall and 350lbs. I believe I can cast it past 200 when I get my timing down.

Check out the Penn Prevail rods at Roy's. I had the prototype and thought it was great especially at 90 dollars or less.
