ok so im getting tired of fixing my 02 dodge 1500. it seems that its one thing after another. ive been lucky and been able to do all the labor myslef but its getting frustrating to have to work on it all the time. i just got the go ahead from the boss to find a new to me truck. i am thinking diesel since i will be pulling my boat and cows around. but im stuck between the ford f250 or the dodge 2500. both trucks in the 4 door longbed 4x4 i want it to be reliable and not break all the time. it will probably be in the 2006 year range as well. any thoughts??

If it is going to be a 2006, as much as I hate to say it, go with the dodge. The 6.0 ford diesels are problematic. The main downfall is the crappy head bolts that stretch and cause you to blow head gaskets. If you can get an older ford with the 7.3 you will be in good shape. I have the motor newer than the 6.0 (2009 6.4). It has tons of power and I have had no problems. It just sucks on the MPG's. In town I get around 12, highway 14, and pulling my 40ft camper I get 6.5

If Duramax isn't an option I would say Dodge. Unless the 6.0 Ford has already had the heads rebuilt correctly. We just replaced the clutch, PS pump, and AC compressor in my sons 03 Dodge Cummins and it only had 130K. But the motor will go forever. He sold it last week and is getting an 07 Duramax.

I have driven both with it currently being the 7.3 f250.

For me, it is a heavy load several times a year and a whole lot of sand driving.
Dodge performs better for me off road. With ford, I still have to be careful in super high and loose sand. With Dodge, never thought about it.

Concerning fuel, dodge was far better on fuel by 3 or 4 per gallon.

For ford, turning radius and comfort far superior to dodge

As for what I want and use in a truck, dodge has been better for me.

Never really had major problems with either one and put 275,000 to 350,000 before finding another used one.

Anyone want to buy f250 7.3 4wd 2001 with 160,000 on it?

i was also considering buying an older ford with the 7.3 as well. its still an option. i am leaning towards a dodge but fords seem to be a little cheeper imo.

GIB how much are you asking?

2005 6.0 PSD with Edge 150 hp and fresh air, pulls hard, smokes dodge, (and 7.3) all stock engine, never had the heads off or the injectors changed, the Turbo is original as well.

That said, 2003 6.0 had problems, 2004 had fewer problems, 2005 was the magic year for the 6.0 and few can dispute the power produced.

Now if you want to make smoke and noise, buy the Dodge. Wink

Or the Dodge I used to have that struggled pulling my boat, I'm sticking with the 6.0 PSD.

i am partial to dodge as long as it has a Cummins engine. i drive an 05 cummins and it is an awesome motor/ truck. i have driven all makes of diesel and like the common rail cummins the most. Fords / powerstrokes might be comfortable and when they are running, perform well, but are more problematic overall with the exception of a 7.3 or the new 6.7. After duramax fixed their injector problems, they made a pretty solid motor too though! each has their own ups and downs, good luck.

My '05 2500 4X4 5.6 L Cummins Dodge with 151K runs strong averages 18 MPG overall. Near 20 MPG empty, nearly 15 MPG pulling my 22' Aquasport. The downside to Dodge is the interior is not as plush and tends to wear poorly. Still, I'm sold on the Dodge with the Cummins.

I don't have a dog in this hunt. I drive Fords but only in gasoline engines. I have had 2 Chrysler products and they were the only 2 vehicles I have owned that were total pieces of junk and crapped out on me. I will never buy another Fiat (Chrysler) product again. If I understand correctly, you have an 02 Dodge that is giving you nothing but trouble and is a total pain in the a$$. Are you sure you really want to buy another Dodge. If I had your experience I wouldn't get near another Dodge.

Never had a ford diesel but when I bought mine my wife worked for a dealership chain that sold all makes. I asked this question of the head man and he said performance wise hands down the dodge, comfort wise the ford.

I have a 2007 dodge 2500 4x4 mega cab w/ 5.9L cummins and I still ove it! 160,000 miles twoing everything from tractors, cattle and boats all over the place. Had to rebuild tranny this year at 150,000 miles and other than that no major issues at all.

If you can find a dodge w/ the cummins 5.9L everyone tells me that is the best motor cummins ever built. I ant disagree from personal experience, they quit building them in 2006 / 7.

I have a fleet of 2011 Dodge Ram's. Can't keep them running and parts are back ordered (for ever). I could not support a brand that does not support it's customers.

Besides, they rattle! and I aint talkin bout the Diesel...
