I met my old buddy John at North Packery Saturday morning. He may look familiar to some of yall. He was one of the deckhands on the 2012 Corpusfishing offshore trip.
Finger Mullet were very hard to come by. Only horse mullet were readily available. I had to work for the live baits I did catch. I ended up catching about a dozen pinfish and about ten croaker. Every one else I saw was using the watermelon shad, but the redfish didn't want 'em. However, one guy was having good luck catching small mangroves on them. They were everywhere. I didn't throw any lures at them, but I did see a few blowups near the end of the jetty.
The man directly to our right was catching Kingfish on his slideline gear. He was set up on the surf side about 50' down from the end. He and his boy ended up with three. They sat on the walkway for a good two hours before they finally left the jetty. That's kind of like snake-farm gross.
Anyway, we caught five total. Two were slots @ 26.5" and 27.5". We tagged a 28.5" and a 28.75". We released a 33 incher (pictured).
We left @ 11am when the bite stopped so I'm not sure how the rest of the day went out there.
I've never seen so many divers out there. There were at least 15 as the visibility was excellent for most of the jetty. John went diving a couple times but didn't see anything worth shooting. He said there were more small mangroves down there that he could count.
It's always nice catching up with old friends.
