| Cool deal, great team work to make it come together. Far cry from clubbing baby fur seals!! Manatees were a common site in JAX FL where we spent 8 years, always fun to see them. |

Wow, another manatee in our waters. I wonder if this is t he same one that was spotted in Rockport, or a different one? _________________ GOBZA!!!

Beachbum, thanks for sharing that. What beautiful footage of what seems to be a very peaceful creature. How wild that it ended up here. _________________ wishn i was fishn...at the beach! <*)}}}>< |

| I know VERY little to nothing about manatees beyond the obvious but I thought that manatees could survive in our waters? How come it wasn't just left alone? Don't take this post as a negative. I am only curious as to why it needed to be rescued. |

Good question. The manatee is a warm water creature and our waters are evidently too cool for it. The manatee sought out the warm water in the Inner Harbor. The boat traffic in the Inner Harbor would be a definite hazard to the manatee.
Great job on the rescue and hats off to the folks who got in the icy water and to the CITGO personnel who helped out. |

Well, manatees are not normally found here and are water temperatures in the winter time drop below what they can handle. Also, this animal is well under weight for its size. The fact that it didn't struggle much during the capture tells us it is in a weaken state. _________________ FISH ON!!,

| Thanks for the reply. Very cool. I kinda thought the water temp may have been a factor. Good job to all those involved. Have you all named it yet? hehehe |

"Have you all named it yet?"...
This mornings paper said they were still trying to determine the sex but it would be called "Dennis" if it is a male and "Denise" if it is a female...
This reminds me of back in 1995 when I lived in Houston. A Manatee was found way up Buffalo Bayou. They were tossing in heads of lettuce and cabbage for it to eat. I heard a rumor that I don't know is true ... that one doofus tossed in some cabbage and left the plastic wrapping on it and when the Manatee ate it it couldn't digest it and became sick and died.
