There we go took the punctuation out. Now gotta add the pics
Hey guys this is my first post on Corpus Fishing but I read the forum a lot and have caught a few fish from following the reports and advice on this board. Anyway this past week has been amazing as I was able to go on the fishing trip of a lifetime. I just wanted to share the story and some photos with you guys because I do not know if I will ever get to do anything like this again.
It started last Sat. night at a fish fry. We were cooking up snapper left over the fed season and talking about taking my buddies small center console out for some King action the next day. Let me emphasize that I am a novice angler. I do quite a bit of inshore fishing mainly in Baffin and around the ULM but offshore-wise my experiences are pretty limited. That all changed around 10:30 PM when I got a call from my collage room-mate from Pearland Texas. It had been a few years since I heard from this fellow and was surprised that he called. His message was this If you can meet me in 4 hours in the city marina in Port A, then we got a spot for you on our 61 foot Cape Hatteras Sport Fisher going on a three day overnighter to Perdido. My old lady is pregnant right now w our first child so my first inclination was that there was no way in hell she was gonna let me. I knew I had to try though. I asked her in the middle of the party making sure all my friends heard me. It was a risky move but I knew as soon as they found out what I was about to do they would assure her that I could not pass up an opportunity like this. To my surprise she was understanding about the whole deal and next thing you know Im racing home throwing gear in a backpack and hauling supple bum to PA. The THUNDER came rolling in at 4:00 am and we were off. I got a little bit of sleep in the air conditioned salon and when I woke up we were in the purple water slow putting our way 160 nautical miles to that giant floater Perdido. We started trolling at the last drop-off canyon before we crossed over into what our crew was calling the desert a vast expanse of structure-less bottom ranging from 2000 ft deep to 7000 ft. The ocean was a lake and we maintained a trolling speed of 11 kts which in my limited knowledge I believed to be too fast. 3 hours into trolling one of the big Penn 80 class Int Vs bursts off the outrigger and didnt stop for what seemed like forever. A mad scramble ensues as one of the crew hops in the chair and prepares for battle. 2 mins later a Blue Marlin comes flying out of the water and does a Nat Geo tail dance for us 50 yards from the boat. I had never seen anything like this before and I was pretty damn excited. The crew did a professional job of leadering the fish for a quick photo and releasing her back to the wild. She was estimated at 200 lbs. I knew we were in for a good trip after that. We had a light crew of 5 people and nobody seemed that interested in reeling fish in. I knew I was going to have a sore back after this trip. Lines start screaming again and this time its a double hook-up on two nice wahoo fish that were hanging around some floating debris. With the heavy tackle I skipped my first wahoo in and she was nice 40 lbs or so. Ten minutes later I was hooked up again and this time whatever it was was dumping line fast. She was on the shotgun line and had taking the 80 down to the backing. After a 45 min battle I had my first bill- a toad of a white marlin prob close to 100 pounds measuring 76 inches. We got her back in safely and she swam off with her pride hurt but her health intact. By the time we made it to Perdido. I didnt care if we caught another fish. We rolled up to the big floater and I couldnt help but be amazed. A month ago I was watching this thing on modern marvels now I was looking right at it. On our second pass around the rig a beast of a blue came thundering through the spread sending plugs flying and causing mass confusion and hysteria. She grabbed a hold of the right short plug and immediately started dumping line. Just as she felt the hook she jumped clear out of the water and shook the hook w ease. This was the king of the ocean. She was 12-14 feet long 500+ lbs. We were in awe. We trolled around a little longer and picked up a few more whoos and a couple nice dolphin fish and waited for dark to settle in so we could get set-up for the true residents of Perdido the massive yellowfin tuna. We switched to lighter tackle and started chumming the waters with cigar minnows. We fished for hours and managed to catch thirty plus blackfin tuna but no yellows. At 3 am it was only me and one other guy left standing determined to put some sashimi on the table. A flying fish landed in the lights behind the boat and I scooped her up with the net. I sent her down with some chum on the thirty class I was using. She got drilled immediately. Line was smoking off the reel and I knew this wasnt a blackfin. It took me two hours of stand-up battle action to land that tuna and my buddy was too tired to gaff her. He went and dug-up his new toy a harpoon and stoned old girl right through the brain. He casually opened up the tuna door and threw what looked like a 75 lber in the box. By that time I was inconceivably tired but there would have been nothing in the world that could have wiped the smile off my face. We trolled around for another day and a half boxed up more wahoo and dolphin. Even stopping to try for swords the next night at a underwater formation. We eventually made it in on a Tuesday afternoon to SPI. I rented a car and drove home to face the wrath. I gotta thank my beautiful girl for being super cool about the whole situation. Especially considering that I got a phone call the next day from the THUNDER asking if I could come back and fish TIFT w them. The old lady reluctantly let me go back and we had a great tournament. Ill save the details on that for later. We were only one of ten boats to catch a blue during TIFT and also landed a white with 8 min left in the tourney and even though we didnt win any pots it was an effort to be proud of. Thanks to THUNDER and the McRay bros for a hell of a week of gulf fishing.

Are you copy pasting it? Something to do with the commas. Will cut off at a comma when pasted. _________________ I like fishies |

Awesome report, sounds like an incredible trip of a life time. And congrats on your first child thats around the corner. You think that yellowfin made you tired - wait till that that baby comes!
By the way, that picture of the freshly caught wahoo is incredible. Most pictures don't catch that gorgeous blue color. |

Thanks for the report. You can send me your whole report and I can try again. The forum cuts off messages when you copy and paste and run into commas or apostrophes. For some reason you have to delete and add them back in yourself. The cutoffs don't show up in the preview but in the finished message. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |
