Fly fished Growing up on freshwater in Southwest Louisiana. Want to try salt water. Need help/guidance on the following:
1. What's a good starter rod and reel? Length etc.
2. I'm assuming flys are the best for salt water? I used poppers mainly on freshwater.
3. Any other tips/advice?

Thanks,
Kevin

9-ft' 8-weight rod with weight forward floating line. Get some basic flies like clousers, deceivers, and poppers and have at it. Those three will cover most of the water column. For reels, consider something with a sealed drag.

Check the classifieds. I just posted a 7/8 reel which is perfect for the salt.

You may want to also consider a full sinking or sinking tip line if you anticipate throwing your flies in the surf. The sinking line seems to cut through the waves a lot better than a floating line. Also get a saltwater specific reel. I just bought one for my son that the sales person at Bass Pro shops said was saltwater durable. NOT!!! The first dunking by a big wave screwed up the drag system and the line out clicker. I recently just purchased an Okuma Helios 8/9. Sweet reel super light and smooth drag and takes a dunking in the surf. Got it on Amazon for $150.
