The last couple of days, I have recently received several reports of fish kills in the West end of Baffin, Alazan, Baffin proper and the Yarborough Pass areas. Commercial drum fishermen in the area have been reporting many dead shad and low to moderate numbers of trout, redfish and sheepshead. I had a call this evening from Lance Self who is a fishing guide based in Riviera Beach. Lance indicated that he and Craig West, another fishing guide, have been seeing dead and dying fish as follows: This past Saturday lots of dead shad mid point in Alazan and from Kleberg to Corrales about one every 100 sq. ft. and many floating in wind lines. Many dead shad were observed in the Yarborough area as well. Sunday, more dead shad in the same areas and a number of large trout , 25-291/2" including one 40" redfish in the Center Reef area. On Monday they found more dead trout 19-25" from Corrales northwest to Kleberg. A number of the area commercial fishermen and guides are very concerned about a repeat major algal bloom fish kill like we experienced during September, 2010 in Baffin. We have an algal bloom that began shortly after Easter in the Cayo Del Grullo and Laguna Salada that has persisted to date. I'm sure that you are aware of the blooms that have persisted off and on primarily in Baffin and from Baffin north during the Spring and now early Summer. With the Summer heating up water temps combined with calmer conditions and heavy algal oxygen demand, we are no doubt in jeopardy of additional fish kills. Please keep us posted on new developments.

Everything is pointing to low D.O. fish kills, as the result of the on-going algal bloom. Not so much so on the toxicity side of things, but the full profiles take some time. Will keep you posted if anything changes.
