|
|
| I was exchanging fishing stories with the folks up in the north east and got hungry and homesick for some raw clams (quahogs). On the TPWD sea-critter website there are a bunch of different types of clams, including the texas quahog. Has anybody harvested or bought any clams in corpus that are good to eat raw? I know HEButts sells small clams but I think they are farm raised and I am always iffy on eating farm raised shellfish raw. |

I am a fan of the clam Luke, but have not done my homework regarding the locals.
My red head French mom-in-law swears by the (non-local) green lipped new Zealand clams which I concur are very tasty.
But never raw...yet. _________________

| You can find a bunch in the oso behind the apt office (with pool) in the ankle deep mud. Dont know that I would eat one though. I have eaten bay scallops (during season) and the occasional horse conch off ransom island/dagger is, and in redfish bay. Jason Slocum |

Here are a couple of resources that may help:
http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/seafood/classification.shtm
http://2coolfishing.com/ttmbforum/showthread.php?t=330009 - most notable from this URL:
| Quote: | There is no commercial fishery for clams in Texas though we have a couple of edible species. As has already been mentioned, the only legal gear that can be used for harvesting clams are your hands. Additionally, they can only be harvested from Approved waters, as classified by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Maps showing Approved, Restricted, and Prohibited waters of each bay system along the Texas coast can be found on their web site (http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/seafood/).
The open season for clams runs concurrently with the oyster season, November 1 - April 30. The daily bag limit is 25 pounds of live clams per person, per day and you must have a saltwater fishing license. You should also check with DSHS (800-685-0361; 24/7) before going clamming (or oystering) as areas may close quickly during harmful algal bloom events.

THanks for all the shared info gentlemen, and for those who didn't really have info, thanks for NOT sharing whatever it is you DO have. Looks like I will be waiting for my trip back home to indulge in some clams on the half-shell. They make great bait too. |

I've seen the orange mantles of scallops in the grass of LM while fishing before. _________________ Dave

Somebody's mother used to make Coquina stew. I wasn't impressed. It's fascinating watching them eat though (Coquinas eating, not the stew people) |
