"You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands." (Isaiah 55:12)
If you asked me...I would say this pretty much describes this day I've had on Padre. And if I didn't feel so fortunate to see the Island so full of water, of life, of SPRINGTIME I would be a fool. I guess I just never realized how much there was to offer on this beautiful Island on the interior, which heretofore shall be named "BTD,"for "Beyond the Dunes," thanks to I believe...Tyler! And with the wind finally laying but the surf chocolate milk....I awoke at the bright and early time of 9am (LOL-thanks Paul for having me over-and giving me an alternative to "Club Shankaw"). And I headed on out, with the mission for the day to be finding a Triangulation Station that was LOST in 1939.....and finally found buried under 2 feet of shifting dunes in '69....and lost again....until the most recent time of 1985. In that year, this station was relocated with a metal detector and shovel, and two "reference stations" were put in place to aid in finding it in the future. Little did I know...that just finding the 1985 reference stations was going to be hard, but nowhere near as hard as finding the actual station....
But life is not without challenges, and I welcome them.
But the beach...it was ready to lay down a little bit....
And I quickly found my lil buddy hanging around....
What a guy...
And I finally made it to my destination...well, pretty close to it that is....And up I went....
And at the top....the dodge laid down and gave up the ghost on this old boy...plate omitted due to obligatory breaking fools' necks that come up on the Towboat household in the night....ask Paul the story....
But this isn't my first rodeo, and 15 minutes later I was rolling out to where I needed to be, albeit a quick stop to put my board back in the grassflats, UNLIKE the previous tool that left this and 5 others laying in the freaking road sidewise....
And I KNEW....that not a soul on this earth was going to be paying me a visit where I was headed on this day....nosir.....
And off I went. See the random "Spoon'R" reflection in the windshield? Lol!
And the springtime, water filled grasses were amazingly pretty...
So I suited up in my snake armor, and got ready to hit the road Jack....hopefully come back.....
And promptly, a cutoff from the Laguna Madre showed her colors...
But I HAD TO GET AROUND IT....so I devised a plan involving....um....GOING AROUND IT!
And man....was I EVER on THE LOOKOUT for those big nasties that we all know like these kinds of water holes....And this ain't Ayers Street, and I'm not a Cholo, but hey man...I da*n sure try!!
But what this spot NEEDED was a Slip-N-Slide! Do kids even do that anymore??
And I tried to get a shot of the 5 million fiddler crabs with body colorations like I have NEVER seen before....but they were so savvy on my butt that even waiting 5 minutes quietly was to no avail...so I rolled out as I always seem to do....
And I made it around the sucker.
And promptly saw the COOLEST bird EVER! And I have NO IDEA what is is....
He looked like a friggin "Baltimore Oriole" bird! Notice how some RETARD drove his piece of CRAP rig right through the freaking slough....
But as I looked behind me at a strange noise from the brush, I realized I was alone....no boneheads but me here....
And I came across a dock from the mainland washed up....
And the ants were DIFFERENT than those from yesterday...no black "butts," just solid colors...
And I soon realized I would have to follow this slough...and man was it deep...
And sure enough....the deer I had earlier come across were still in the area....but WATCHING me....
Who can blame them? I'm goofy!
And you can run...but you can't hide....from the Towboat...
So I snuck up the old gal....only to see her 6 others sisters!!
And I got closer yet!
And some Pelican-like....but all white....birds distracted me....and I grabbed a quick shot of them....
But the deer weren't ready to sound the alarm just yet....
And about an hour later or so, I approached my search site....
And only could find this!
And then this....
And there was no way for me to know why or what this was there for...But like Skynyrd said, "Tuesday's Gone with the Wind," and it was time to MOVE ON and keep searching the area.
And 30 minutes later I found this...
The witness post.
And that was that. I couldn't find the freaking triangulation station to save my life. And realizing that there had been two reference stations laid down in 1985 to help find the main station due the fact that THIS area USED to be a big shifting powdery sand dune, I finally found reference station 1.
But try as I might....I could NOT...NOT...make sense of the various information to decipher where reference station number 2 was located....and have you ever tried to locate a needle in a haystack???
But within an hour.....I found it....
And a wildfire burnt survey maker from the Corps again???
Just how....I found it........thankYOU B to the I to the TCH "Buster."
And at the point where the two reference station arrows crossed was to be the location of the main station....but it was OBVIOUSLY buried under what used to be a dune of powder sand, not covered in vegetation....
So I began digging with my bare hands....
And I dug a pretty big hole as the sweat ran down my face and those crazy bees from yesterday showed back up to strafe my poor noggin'.....
And after two hours, I had to give up. I was getting the chills again, and I KNEW I was facing the barrel of sun "whatever its called." So I headed back.
And with just about nothing left to give my Island....I stumbled into camp like a Desert Island victim....
Bearing the signs of my stupid idea to dig my way to China...
And my bird was back but with a partner in crime....
And after a quick respite for water and food, I headed to the Laguna.
And found....Indian Blanket!!!
And Horse Mullet!
And before I left, I checked out what appears to be the end of the pipeline I've spent the week following....
True Texas history here.....
And my bird showed himself again!
That's a wrap folks. Sorry about the lack of fish! Brought the rods, didn't like the water clarity....lol....but I had a ball anyway. Here's to nature, and places that call our names whether we like it or not.
And if you're like me, and you don't wanna conform, you don't like this world, this society you find yourself in, this system of buy it on credit and work the rest of your life paying all this stuff off that never ever makes you really happy anyway....heck isn't that why we FISH...?
I say get back behind that dune line. It's life back to basics back there....
Have a great Sunday.

Colin, that's an American Avocet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Avocet) in breeding plumage.
No, I didn't know that off the top of my head... but, I downloaded the National Audobon Society app for my phone a little while back and hadn't had the chance to use it a whole lot. It's really pretty cool; you can search for matches based on shape, habitats, regions, colors, sizes, wing shapes, song/call type, song/call patterns, locomotion, state and month. I don't think it requires internet access after the initial installation so it would actually be useful on PINS.
Cool story! |

| Colin, you need to write the next Great American Novel. You seriously have the making to write a book on your adventures....adventures that are incredibly in our back yard for the taking. Good on you! |

Haha, yes I just might have "saw" you guys too!
Thanks for all the bird/plant assistance guys, our network has turned out to be a great resource for those things. Glad you all enjoyed the read! _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.
