What web resources do you use for marine conditions, specifically wave height forecast, before deciding to make a trip off the beach?
Reason I ask is that we've been using NOAA Marine, which had forecast 2-3 footers for yesterday (Sunday). We attempted to fish out of Packery (in a powerboat, mind you) and made it about half way to one of the close rigs before turning around back to the ramp.
The yardstick in my head told me we definitely weren't dealing with 2 footers...3-4 footers were what I estimated. Sloppy ones at that.
While we were out for maybe an hour or so, I did manage to boat at 37" king on a trolled Rapala about a half mile or so from the jetties.
Any intel on one or more reliable marine condition sites would be greatly appreciated. |

For air, wind, and water temp conditions, I use the weather stations listed on weatherunderground.com |

pay close attention to the direction of the waves and the wave period, when yakking its just as important, maybe even more. 2-3 swells for me are more comfy then 1-2 sloppy cross-chop. When you are constantly having to correct your stroke, adjust the direction of the bow and stop-n-go to make sure you don't get smacked with a wave, it makes it impossible to troll.
Swellinfo is great but its hard to put your bottom dollar on anything more then 3 days in the future, as the predictions change quickly. Unfortunately, like you kind of alluded to, forecasts are one thing but until you get out there and give it a good hard look, you just never know. |

X2, FYI, When looking at the swellinfo.com surf forecast page, see the left side of the actual chart. The chart defaults to show us the surf height forecast using the Knee, Waist, Chest, etc. But, if you click on the "Swells" button, you'll get an idea of what is going to affect your BTB trip once you get past the surf zone. Good Luck on you next trip. _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |
