Trying to plan ahead. What would be a good boat/motor(s) choice for offshore? Would like to be able to daylight to dark, 70-80 miles out, comfortable surroundings for wife, kids and their families. If that would require nothing short of a 35' Bertram, okay, then - 40-50 miles out. Wife said she wants nothing short of 35', though. I've got 3-7 years to plan for this. Cousin in Rockport already has a bay boat, so I don't need to cover that ground again.

An inboard diesel would be best (like a Bertram) but it seems like you'll be getting outboards. Everglades boats have a great reputation. I've never fished one, but talked to a guy who has and really like his. While I would go with a center console, your wife may like the cuddy cabin better:

You're on, Skippy!

FIDO - I would definitely prefer diesel, but only if the boat had two of them. Not inclined to get too far out with only one engine. That being the case, I'm just making the assumption that diesel then becomes far too expensive. I looked at the boats you mentioned, and they look nice. However, picturing myself fishing over and around those three motors has me wanting inboards.

We go out as far as 65 miles in a 25 ft. World Cat with twin 140 hp Suzki outboards with out any issues. It also gets excellent mileage.

That is exactly what I hope my retirement looks like.

I have been out 40 to 60 miles several times on a friends 27 foot World Cat and you can't beat the ride period! I bought a 24.5 Hydrasport cuddy cabin in 1998 just before I retired, but if I had known then how much better the ride was on a cat I would not have bought a conventional V bottom hull. Good luck on what ever you get, but be aware that the older you get, the tougher the gulf gets.

IMS - I've only found a couple or three older (circa 1990) used twin Cat Whalers. I did not see any reference on their website for any new models with diesels. Is there a specific model that has that option available?

For the specification you mentioned I would be looking for something in the size and style of this...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Canyon-Boat-39-foot-twin-diesel-Sportfisherman-Updated-2001-/330721904262?pt=Fishing_Boats&hash=item4d008fc686

You don't need 39' but diesel engines, are a must, the salon with A/C, shower, potty, and galley will keep SWMBO happiest. You'll have the size and seaworthiness to hang out offshore over night. You can head offshore on more days than you would with an open boat of less displacement. And, a place to bunk if you are not living on the coast. This would be my dream. Very Happy
