alot of my close freinds and i have planned a trip to camp out at PINS June 7th-10th. I just started fishing the surf about a year ago. I have only realy gone out for whitting and what ever hits fishbites. But this trip we all want to catch something alittle more exciting. Can anyone give some tips on how to find jacks and catch them, and or any other drag pulling fish.

Drive the beach looking for bait coming ot of the water like they are on steroids or beaching themselves.

Tie anything that shines and throw around them, and then hold on for dear life.

I personally have never caught one but I have done my research on them! As Gib said, look for baitfish and birds. This doesn't for sure mean that it's jacks, it could be specks, Bonita, ladyfish, smacks or really anything else for that matter. I would throw one line out with a live mullet and on another, I'd throw a spoon with a wire leader. If you do end up catching a jack, ray, Bonita or ladyfish, cut it up and throw it past the second or 3 sandbar for a great battle with one of those toothy critters! Have fun and post up a report when you come back!

Razz That's it! Or watch the curls in the waves as they roam the bars. You will see them actively hunting.

this!!

i like this one "hold on for dear life"....so true!!!

also, if you find a school of them working in casting distance, they move FAST...drive at least 100 yards beyond the direction they are going, if not more and get ready!

Here's how I look for Jacks.

I get up EARLY EARLY when there's a full moon, and go toss topwaters looking for trout...sure enough, some stinking Jack always crashes the party and makes off with my $7 lure.

Live mullet, cut mullet, cut lady fish, sunk out there seem to produce them too...and hold on...you've hooked onto the freight train of the Gulf of Texas.
