I have a Johnson 8.0 hp outboard motor. I am having a hard time getting the motor to stay on idle it keeps turning off. The only way that it'll stay on is if I hold the choke half way out and hold it there .

I changed the plugs and fuel line.
Any thoughts on the matter?

I am more than willing to pay for services but need an honest / reasonable boat mechanic.

Thanks...

having been a mechanic I can tell you...you only get one or the other...honest and reasonable is too much to ask.

I had a slightly larger engine 115 Evinrude had the same idle issues. I rebuilt the carbs myself (not recommended if your not familiar with carbs) and totally fixed the problertem...

I'd put my bet on the carb. I have two older Mercs, one 6 hp and the other a 4.5 hp. Both have had the same symptoms once. One was fixed with a carb kit/rebuild. The other was totally fixed in 6 minutes by someone who knows what he's doing - as opposed to me! - getting the carb adjusted correctly.

I like to tinker, but am mechanically challenged when it comes to carbs and electrical systems. For me it's worth dropping something like this at the shop.

I had the same boat(Majek) and motor(Yamaha) for 15+ years, disconnected the fuel line and ran the fuel out after every trip...Never a carb problem, even after sitting two years, prime and start...G

Clean the carb bowl and jets out. Then see what happens.

Hope this helps. It's a write up on maintenance.
