Riding around today and ended up at the packery channel jetties. there was a lot of bait in the water but not a lot of catching. couple of the guys caught what they were calling jacks and pigfish. another guy was saying skipjack. confusion. i was wondering if any of y'all had compiled an identification guide with some of those high quality pics. i'm assuming some of these near shore species look a lot alike especially as juveniles. anything like that exist already? |

Get a copy of Hoese & Moore's book. It's got tons of pictures and descriptions, including some to help ID juveniles. Tyler used to have advertising for it somewhere on this site. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

What Trash heap said about Hoese and Moore, plus this one below is an incredible guide. Every species is illustrated. Val Kells is a tremendous wildlife artist and her work is extremely accurate. Kent Carpenter, the other author, writes the fisheries guides to fishes. This little gem is new so has all the recent scientific names (sometimes they change) and I think its less than 20 bucks. Great deal.

Also, on the links on the banner to the left on the main page, under "great fishing books", theres Fishes of the Texas Laguna Madre by David McKee, another great inexpensive book with good illustrations. Theres also a link to Hoese and Moore's book on that same page. |

Skipjack are also called Ladyfish. They think they are tarpon many times and can put up a decent fight on light tackle. I caught a 2ft skipjack a few nights ago fishing for trout under the lights, and that sucker came flying out of the water probably 3-4ft. Great for kids to catch and learn on. |
