| I'm wondering is anyone can help....we have a trip planned for arrival this Saturday (4-6) however, all the posts I've read about this "brown tide"' & the "dirty water" are making me rethink visiting right now. Can anyone tell me the water condition at the packery channel and if the fishing is any good right now? We have been fishing the channel since it opened and really love it but when the water is not right, the fishing sucks!!! HELP!! |

I went to the channel a few times this weekend, and the conditions were slightly different each day. Friday afternoon, north jetty, surf side was green and clear, as was the channel side near the tip. At the tip of the north, you could see schools of sheepshead and mullet. Plenty of sheepshead being caught on freelined live shrimp. Channel side, there was a good mixing of dirty bay water with grean gulf water as the tide came in. The mixing of the two colors looked like a lava lamp near the mouth of the channel.
Sunday, south jetty, surfside the water was churned and weedy. Chocolate. Channel side a little greener. Surfside of the north jetty looked OK. ABout 200 feet or so past the mouth of the channel, there was a stark color change from brown to deep green. The color change looked like a great place to trawl a lure with a kayak but it was too choppy all weekend. Still some sheepies being caught from the channel side of the north jetty. No smacks or jacks working when I was there, but they smacks were thick in the afternoon early last week.
Make the trip. |

| Thanks for the info. From all the reports it sounds like even with the brown water (and wind) people are still catching fish!! |

Exactly. I too much prefer nice, clear water, but the lack thereof bothers the fisherman way more than the fish much of the time. Kind of like fishing when it's raining........................ the fish can't get any wetter! _________________ Dave

| Yeah, I know how it sounds.........just wanted someone to be our eyes down there .... we have a 7 hr. trip to make and bringing our teenage son to try to introduce him to fishing, so wanted conditions to be such that he just might catch a fish and get "hooked" on fishing.... no pun intended! thanks. |

When I was that age I even had fun catching hardheads and pinfish, and they bite ESPECIALLY WELL when the water is muddy and rough!!! _________________ Dave

Have a plan B if things don't work out. Wade the back side of Mustang Island near the state park or fish along the Aransas Pass Causeway, try out Bob Hall pier etc. There are so many options _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

yeah, but if we come that far, we like to be able to eat what we catch...
I know, we're asking alot!!!
Has anyone been to the packery channel in the past couple of days? If so, how's the water color?
Tide chars shows this next week to be the most active current (beginning on Sunday)....in the past we've found that the high tide movement makes for good fishing. |

Heck, even something like croaker is great eating if you can find them, and very willing and able when around. Don't forget Fish Pass jetties either! _________________ Dave
